Curriculum Details

Paramedics are healthcare professionals who possess special knowledge and advanced skills in pre-hospital emergency medicine. They are the eyes, ears, and hands of the physician at the hospital, and as such, they render basic and advanced life support to patients at the scene of their injuries or illness, and continue while transporting these patients to the hospital. Paramedics are in radio contact with the physician at the hospital at all times. Paramedics are part of the rapidly expanding branch of the health care profession known as EMS (Emergency Medical Services).

Paramedic training is delivered through a combination of classroom instruction (Didactic and Psychomotor skills) and a blend of clinical/filled experience. Upon successful completion of the course, students are eligible to sit for the National Registry's written and practical examinations. Upon successful completions of examinations and other licensure requirements, the student will be eligible for the State of Tennessee Paramedic license.

Students interested in an A.A.S. degree Paramedic degree can incorporate the Paramedic Technical Certificate (43 credit hours) by taking general education courses prior to the program, in-curriculum with the paramedic program, or after the paramedic technical certificate is completed.

Students may not receive multiple degrees, but either the A.A.S. Paramedic, A.A.S. in Fire Science with concentration in Emergency Medical Care, or A.A.S. in Management with concentration in Health Services.

Minimum Expectations Goal of the Chattanooga State Paramedic Program:

“To prepare competent entry-level Paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains with or without exit point at the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician and /or Emergency Medical Technician, and/or Emergency Medical Responder levels.”

Accreditation

The Chattanooga State Paramedic program is accredited by the CAAHEP - Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (727-210-2350) upon the recommendation of the CoAEMSP - Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (214-703-8445).
