Why did you become a teacher?

I chose teaching as a career because I believe that reading and writing are vital to creating inclusive communities and global cultures. Literature of all genres illustrates the interconnectedness of humanity, demonstrating that we are not solitary in our human experiences and teaching us how to relate to one another. Though we may never have the ability to travel the world and meet people from diverse cultures, we have access to unlimited experiences and worldviews through the stories told in books. I hope to bring this appreciation of reading and writing to my students and community, emboldening a spirit of benevolent curiosity in each person passing through my classroom.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I had two competing interests as a child. Beginning in 3rd grade, I wanted to be a writer. I wanted to use words to make people feel the kinds of things I felt when reading. In 4th grade, I developed an interest in science. This was the Kennedy years when space exploration dominated discussions of science, but my interests were across the spectrum from meteorology, archaeology, and electronics to astronomy, biology, geology, chemistry, and physics. My best friend and I had our own science lab and would have expanded it further if we had had the resources. By the time I entered high school, I considered myself a scientist who only lacked the training of specialization in a field.

Why did you become a teacher?

I took a class on American Character with an amazing professor at a little community college in Mt. Carmel, IL. She introduced me to Benjamin Franklin’s Autobiography, a book about a boy from a poor family who values education and works hard to help the world around him. It was during that class and that reading that I decided to become a college professor.
