Why did you become a teacher?

I became a teacher accidentally, convinced all through college I would be a book editor. But from day one in front of a Composition class (barely older than the students!), I was hooked. What a joy to play with language and help writers feel less intimidated by academic discourse.

What is your favorite book?

So many favorite books, but Catcher in the Rye is surely near the top of the list in fiction. When I read it as a young teen, it was the first time I understood that there are many, many ways to see the world.

What is your favorite book?

What avid reader can really choose one book out of so many as the singular favorite? But since I must pick one, I choose Marion Zimmerman Bradley's The Mists of Avalon, which I read when I spent a summer in England. I discovered and fell in love with the genre of Medieval Literature, particularly Arthurian Legend, during the course of that experience. It is not the most well-written, nor has it made any bestseller list, but as many times as I've read it, it has remained timeless and continues to remind me of an unforgettable adventure.

What is your favorite hobby?

I am a nascent Birdwatcher. Learning birdsong is by far the trickiest part (there are so many nuances!). I've found that watching and listening to birds attunes me to my surroundings and is something I can take anywhere - on walks, on hikes, in the backyard.
