Curriculum Details The Nursing Program's Transition Pathways help Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Paramedics to attain an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Nursing. Graduates apply a clinical decision-making process to deliver care to a variety of individuals across the lifespan. A minimum grade of “C” must be earned in all required courses.

Schedule for the Transition Pathways
All Transition students begin their Pathway program in the summer semester at the ChattState Main Campus.
- They attend classes during the day, and two to three days per week.
- The summer semester is 10-credit-hours.
- They enroll in two summer courses:
- Mental Health Nursing (NRSG 1340)
- and either of two accelerated medical-surgical courses, depending on their prior-learning experience:
- LPNs will take (NRSG 1700)
- Paramedics will take (NRSG 1701)
Upon successful completion of the summer semester, students progress into the second-year curriculum of the Traditional Pathways already in progress:
- Traditional - Day Pathway
- LENGTH: the remaining 5 courses can be completed in 1 year
- LOCATION: ChattState Main Campus or Kimball Instructional Site
- CLASSES START: every Fall
- Traditional - Night Pathway
- LENGTH: the remaining 6 courses can be completed in 1 and a half years
- LOCATION: ChattState Main Campus
- CLASSES START: the Fall of odd-numbered years
RN Licensure Examination
The Nursing A.A.S. degree meets the educational requirements to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination for the Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN). Upon passing the NCLEX-RN exam, licensure as a Registered Nurse is awarded by the state regulatory body.

Mission
The purpose of the nursing program is derived from and consistent with the mission of Chattanooga State Community College. The Nursing Program serves students from multiple counties in Tennessee and bordering states by preparing them to be competent nurses who will help meet the current and emerging needs in the nursing workplace. The nursing program maintains state approval (Tennessee Board of Nursing) and national accreditation (Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing). Graduates from the nursing program earn an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree, which meets the educational requirements to be eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination for the Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN). Upon passing the NCLEX-RN exam, licensure as a Registered Nurse is awarded by the state regulatory body.
