Dear Chattanooga State Community,

“Little by little
Inch by inch
By the yard it’s hard
By the inch what a cinch
never stare up the stairs
Just step up the steps
Little by little
Inch by inch.”

These are the words of a favorite childhood song.  Not only does this song have a catchy tune, but its message also resonates with me as I think about making progress toward big goals.

What does success mean to you? Is it a good job?  A happy family? A big house? A fancy car? Happiness? However you define success, it is never achieved in one step. It’s lots of little steps. Lots of little successes along the way. Success is a journey.

Your first step to success has already happened. It began when you decided to go to college, or to come back to college, or to attend college while you are still in high school. It was one step.

You followed that first step by showing up! Whether you felt overwhelmed on the first day or knew you had made the right decision, you came back the second day.

As we look back over the last 7- or 15-weeks, you persevered. You looked to the next step, and you took it. It is only now, that we are here at the end of the semester that you can look back and reflect on your semester or time here at ChattState and all the steps you have taken to get here. Look at what you’ve accomplished by taking one step at a time.

Pat yourself on the back, give yourself a round of applause, shout for joy—you are a success! Listen closely, you’ll hear those around you celebrating with you, celebrating your success.

We congratulate you for all you’ve accomplished!

Now, what is the next step?
