President’s Updates for the Campus Community

March 25th, 2024

Dear Chattanooga State Community,

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that a good way to stay motivated is to go back to your vision—the overarching goal you have for your life that motivated you to enroll in college.

Over the weekend, I listened to a podcast that featured an in-depth interview with Arnold Schwarzenegger. During the interview, Arnold spoke several times about how his vision for his life motivated him to work incredibly hard to achieve his goals. Early in his life, when lifting weights for 5 hours at a time, he would not think about how tired he was. Instead, he was grateful for the workouts, as it was these daily workouts that would lead him to achieve his vision. He would visualize himself on a stage, he could hear people calling his name, and he would visualize himself being named Mr. Universe or Mr. Olympia. He would create a very clear picture in his mind of how the achievement would look. He reflected on how this visualization impacted his ability to accomplish his goals.

No matter what your overall vision for your next few years or for your life might be, having a clear picture in your mind of what that might look like is an important part of the visioning process. One tool many people use to create a picture of their vision is to create a vision board. Vision boards can include pictures, quotes, symbols, or anything that creates a visual representation of what you want to achieve.

On Wednesday, April 3 at 2:00 p.m. in the Branch Center room 54, the Center for Access and Disability Services will host a Vision Board and Art Party. This is a free event—with free food—that will give you the opportunity to create your own vision board. I hope you can take advantage of this opportunity to create a visual representation of your vision. If you cannot attend, I hope you will continue to focus on your vision and create a picture of what accomplishing your vision will look like.
