Summer Financial Aid - Types of Aid

The following provides information about how specific types of financial aid work for summer classes:

Pell Grant

This federal grant, based on financial need, pro-rates based on actual enrollment even though it is awarded with the anticipation of full-time hours. So, you may or may not be eligible for any Pell Grant in the summer at less than full-time enrollment. Also, the grant only pays towards classes that are required for graduation in your current program of study, one repeat of classes that you have already passed with a grade of “D” or better (at any school), and up to 30 hours of learning support (remedial) courses (at any school). If you have already used 100% of your Pell Grant award for the current academic year, you may be eligible for another 50% of your annual award, as long as you enroll at least half-time (6 or more credit hours) in eligible classes and have not reached your lifetime limit. You must also be meeting SAP guidelines as of the end of the spring semester, when you first enroll, or as of the last time you were enrolled at Chattanooga State.

Direct Loans

Loan borrowers must complete a Loan Modification form, available on the main page of TigerWeb, under the “Financial Aid” menu: How to Complete a Loan Modification

Subsidized or unsubsidized federal loan eligibility depends on your year in college, how much of your loans you have already used this year, your program length, financial need, and whether you are dependent or independent according to the FAFSA. Direct Loans will also only pay towards classes that are required for graduation in your current program of study, one repeat of classes that you have already passed with a grade of “D” or better (at any school), and up to 30 hours of learning support (remedial) courses (at any school). You must also be meeting SAP guidelines as of the end of the spring semester, when you first enroll, or as of the last time you were enrolled at Chattanooga State. If it is your first time borrowing federal student loans at Chattanooga State, you will also need Entrance Counseling and a Master Promissory Note (MPN) on file, both of which you can complete at https://studentaid.gov/. If you complete a Loan Modification form, the Financial Aid Office will determine your eligibility based on your annual and lifetime loan limits.

HOPE Scholarship

Your eligibility for summer classes depends on your GPA as of the last benchmark evaluation (12, 24, 36, etc., attempted hours) and whether or not you have reached your lifetime limit. Unless you have completed a TELS appeal for special circumstances, you must be enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours) in order for lottery scholarships to pay towards your classes, and your scholarships pro-rate based on actual enrollment. If you are a recent high school graduate, you are not eligible for the HOPE/TELS scholarships until the fall semester after your high school graduation. If your enrollment in summer classes changes at any point, you could permanently lose eligibility in the future. You may notify the Financial Aid Office in writing if you do not want to use your HOPE or TELS scholarship(s) in the summer:

24 credits – 2.75 GPA
48 credits – 2.75 GPA
72 credits – 3.00 GPA
96 credits – 3.00 GPA

TN Promise Scholarship

Remember that the community service hours deadline is waived for now, so you still may be eligible for TN Promise funds in the summer if you were not able to complete your hours by April 1st. You still have to be meeting the enrollment and GPA requirements, although you may want to take summer classes if you do not have an overall 2.0 GPA after grades post for spring. The 5-semester limit is also still in effect. Unless it is your final semester, or you have an approved appeal, you must also enroll full-time in the summer, and it will count towards your 5-semester limit. Remember that this is a “last dollar” scholarship that pays only towards tuition and mandatory fees (fees charged to all students). If you are a recent high school graduate, you are not eligible to use the TN Promise scholarship until the fall semester after high school graduation.

TN Reconnect Grant

You still have to be meeting the enrollment and GPA requirements, although you may want to take summer classes if you do not have an overall 2.0 GPA after grades post for spring. The 5-year limit is also still in effect. Unless it is your final semester, or you have an approved appeal, you must also enroll at least half -time in the summer, and it will count towards your 5-year limit. Remember that this is a “last dollar” scholarship that pays only towards tuition and mandatory fees (fees charged to all students).

Institutional Scholarships

Most Chattanooga State scholarships are awarded in fall and spring only. Students will be contacted if they have remaining summer 2020 eligibility or their awards will be automatically extended to summer 2020.

Federal Work Study

Since campus has been closed, we have had to use guidance from the U.S. Department of Education regarding use of funding for the Federal Work Study program. Current guidance only applies to current student employees with an existing employment contract. We may or may not be able to hire additional students during the summer, and your Federal Work Study eligibility for the current aid year may end with your current contract.
