Summer Financial Aid - Questions

In most cases, you will only need to register for your May, June, or July classes, and your aid eligibility will be calculated. Keep in mind the following information:

Did you meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) guidelines?

For any scholarships, grants, or loans, except TN Promise, TN Reconnect, and some institutional scholarships, you must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) guidelines at the end of spring, or when you enroll. SAP status cannot be determined until grades post for spring, so you may not be eligible for the aid that is showing on your account. If this scenario applies to you, be prepared to complete a SAP appeal to receive aid in the summer: How to Complete a SAP Appeal

Did you register for the correct number of credit or clock hours?

Your eligibility for federal, state, or institutional aid may depend on your enrollment for summer. Some of your scholarships, grants, or loans may not pay if you are not attending the correct number of credit or clock hours.

Has your FAFSA information been verified for the current aid year?

Verification of your FAFSA information for the current aid year must be completed, if required by the U.S. Department of Education, before any aid can be awarded for the summer semester.

Are you a loan borrower?

Loan borrowers must complete a Loan Modification form, available on the main page of TigerWeb, under the “Financial Aid” menu: How to Complete a Loan Modification

Can you use financial aid for bookstore charges?

Up until the census date (14th day) of the full summer semester, financial aid shows as authorized (pending) based on your eligible summer registration. If you will have excess aid based on your authorized aid amount and have an accepted Title IV Fee Authorization on file, you may be eligible to charge books and supplied at the campus bookstore (online) to your excess financial aid. You can use bookstore charges during the period when your first summer class starts – you will not have bookstore charges available later. Bookstore charge periods are very short in the summer due to the various start dates. If your enrollment or aid eligibility changes, you may still be responsible for paying bookstore charges.

When will financial aid be paid?

After the census date (14th day) of the full summer semester, your financial aid funds are released to the Bursar’s Office to pay to your accounts based on your confirmed attendance in eligible classes. If you end up with a credit (negative) balance, the Bursar’s Office will issue a refund within 3-5 business days. If you have classes that start later in the summer, then all of your aid will not pay until you begin attending all classes, and you may have to wait until later in the semester for your refund.
