Henry Lautz was born in Topeka, Kansas, and lives in Atlanta. He is in the process of re-locating to Chattanooga. Mr. Lautz's undergraduate education was at Baker University, the University of Paris (Sorbonne), and Washington University. His graduate studies were at New York University and Georgia State University. Mr. Lautz's work has been exhibited at the Oglethorpe Museum of Art in Atlanta, the Vero Beach Museum of Art in Vero Beach, Florida, the Axel Gallery in Los Angeles, and the Afterimage Gallery in Dallas, Texas. His three sculptures in the Chattanooga State exhibit are part of an ongoing series of works named after landmarks along the Oregon Trail. Questions raised by Mr. Lautz in these works are "What do long amounts of time look like?" and "What do organic forms and human-made forms have in common, and how do they differ?"

Artist Statement: My sculpture is not about what it looks like. It's about what it feels like; I am interested in visual experiences that leave me feeling good for no apparent reason; My sculptures are perhaps best approached by looking with soft eyes and without preconception; Art has the ability to take us beyond the appearance of the work we are looking at; Fundamental to my work is the belief that Art offers a path to healing and to the sublime.
