The Medical Laboratory Technician is an essential member of the health care team, performing laboratory tests used in the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of disease, and the maintenance of health. In fact, 80% of all medical decisions are based on laboratory results. Medical Laboratory Technicians are as dedicated to patients’ health as are doctors and nurses, though their direct contact is limited. Medical Laboratory Technicians play an important role in collecting the information needed to give the best care to an ill or injured patient.
This is an ideal career for individuals who enjoy limited patient contact, the security of job skills, and the possibility of advancement. Medical Laboratory Technicians are problem solvers. They must be skilled, accurate, and dedicated. In addition to examining specimens through a microscope, Medical Laboratory Technicians also search for data on a patient’s health by operating complex electronic equipment, computers, and precision instruments. The skills that Medical Laboratory Technicians possess make them employable in several environments including hospital laboratories, private clinics, research labs, vet labs, industry, forensic studies, and public health facilities.
The MLT program prepares graduates for entry level positions performing general testing in the following areas:
- Clinical Chemistry
- Hematology
- Immunology
- Immunohematology/ Blood Bank
- Microbiology
- Urine and Body Fluid Analysis
After completing all academic and clinical requirements, students will be eligible to sit for the national certification exam and apply for state licensure.
An Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Medical Laboratory Technology requires five semesters to obtain. This full-time curriculum encompasses both general education requirements and specific medical laboratory technology skills. Course experience will occur in ChattState's state-of-the-art facilities, while clinical experiences will occur at local hospitals and research labs.

Mission
The Medical Laboratory Technology Program, with the assistance of its clinical affiliate laboratories, is committed to providing quality didactic and clinical instruction to prepare students to enter the workforce as Medical Laboratory Technicians. The program is committed to serving our healthcare community by ensuring our students will become knowledgeable, compassionate, professional, and skilled Medical Laboratory Technicians that are able to provide healthcare providers with the necessary information for diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
According to the US Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics’ 2022-2032 Occupational Outlook Handbook, there were approximately 342,900 MLT/MLS jobs in the United States in 2022. Because of the increased number of workers reaching retirement, the number of jobs in the laboratory field is expected to grow 5% through 2032.
