April 22nd, 2024

Dear Chattanooga State Community,

I recently read a short book by Admiral William H. McRaven. In this book, Admiral McRaven discusses the life lessons he learned in Navy SEAL training and how those lessons could change the world.

The last lesson he highlights is about perseverance. In SEAL training, if the students want to quit, if the training is just too much, if the students no longer want to wake up early, go on long runs, or swim in freezing cold water, all they have to do is ring a bell. If they ring that bell, they get to sleep in, they get comfort, they get relaxation. They also give up on a dream. As McRaven says, “If you want to change the world, don’t ever, ever ring the bell.”

You might be feeling like you cannot make it any longer. The end of the semester might seem too much to take. You may want to leave the challenges of college behind and give up. You are almost to the finish line. Hang in there. Never, ever ring the bell.
