CHATTANOOGA, TN -- Arts students and faculty at Chattanooga State Community College this spring will offer a variety of events from student recitals to plays and musicals. All events are free to the public except as noted, but donations are accepted at the door. Presentations are held at the Chattanooga State Humanities Theater except as noted. 

Art: Ongoing Student Art Exhibitions

Location: CAT Student Gallery, CETAS Student Gallery, Andrews Center Student Gallery   

Student Art Exhibition: an ongoing exhibition of student drawings, paintings, and photographs exhibited in the CAT and CETAS buildings, and in the Donald F. Andrews Reading & Writing Center continually throughout the semester.   

Music: Sophia Hassevoort, Soprano, Student Recital
Friday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.
Location: Humanities Theatre  

Sophia Hassevoort, soprano, will perform a recital of classical and musical theatre vocal selections along with her collaborative pianist, Janelle McDonald.  Sophia graduated with an AFA in Theatre Performance in December 2023. This recital was originally scheduled for last month prior to her graduation, but it was postponed due to illness.  ChattState is excited to welcome her back to perform her sophomore recital.

The Chattanooga State Music Department faculty presents selections from the classical, contemporary, and American music repertories. Selections include works for voice, piano, guitar, and other instruments.

Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m.
Location: Humanities Theatre  

Join the Chattanooga State Symphonic Band on a toe-tapping journey through concert band works composed around songs, folk tunes, and dances.  The Symphonic Band is directed by Nicholas Hartline and includes students from the STEM School, Collegiate High, as well as community musicians.

An award-winning musical based on the 2001 movie of the same name, this musical follows the story of UCLA fashion merchandising major Elle Woods as she goes to Harvard Law School to fight for love.  Along the way, she goes through a journey of self-discovery and empowerment and finds love and friendship she never knew she was looking for. A musical featuring big song-and-dance numbers, this production stars Chattanooga State student Moriah Bone as Elle Woods and features other ChattState students and alumni, as well as other performers from the Chattanooga area.  Tickets are $15 for general admission but are free for ChattState students, faculty, staff, and theatre department alumni.

Thursday, March 7 at 7 p.m.
Location: Humanities Theatre  

Chattanooga State AFA Music graduate and violin instructor Emily Drexler will present a violin recital featuring Rhapsody No. 1 by Jesse Montgomery, the violin sonata by Amanda Maier, and other works.  Dr. Alan Nichols will accompany her on the piano.   

Music and Theatre: Maggie Williams Cabaret Fundraiser
Saturday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m.
Location: Humanities Theatre  

Friends and Family of Maggie Williams come together to perform a cabaret of musical theatre songs celebrating her and honoring her friendship.  Maggie is a ChattState alumna and also was the production manager at ChattState from 2016-2023 until she had a series of strokes at the beginning of April.  She is continuing her recovery journey, and we are excited to celebrate her through song and dance. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted toward her family’s ongoing medical expenses.

The Chattanooga State Jazz Band presents an evening of jazz standards with a mixed ensemble under the musical direction of Jay Stanfill.

Saturday, April 6 at 7 p.m.
Location: Humanities Theatre  

If you didn't get a chance to get away over spring break, then join Chattanooga State's Concert Choir for "What a Wonderful World." We will take a musical round trip to faraway places, as we explore unique choral music and folk songs from China, Egypt, Brazil, Scotland, and others. We'll end our vacation with a smooth landing back home for our final stop.

Sunday, April 7 at 3 p.m.
Location: Humanities Theatre  

The faculty trio Chattywampus, led by flutist Cindy Solfest-Wallis, clarinetist Nicholas Hartline, and pianist Alan Nichols, will present an evening of chamber music from various musical periods and styles.  The concert will also feature a student trio.

Admission is free for ChattState Students, Faculty/Staff, and Theatre Alumni; $15 General Admission. 

This play is considered an “unauthorized continuation” of the popular Peanuts comic strip and is advertised as a parody of the characters, depicting them as high school students with teenage issues.  The play begins right after CB’s dog dies from rabies, and explores the relationships and issues he is having with his grief and his own identity.  The play is both comedic and intensely dramatic, and it explores deep issues in a way that is both harrowing and hopeful.  Tickets are $15 for general admission but are free for ChattState students, faculty, staff, and theatre department alumni.   

This production is rated R and is not suitable for children. It contains strong language, violence, and explicit content.

Music: “Musical Melting Pot” featuring the Symphonic Band
Thursday, April 25 at 7 p.m.
Location: Humanities Theatre  

The Chattanooga State Symphonic Band presents an evening of band music from around the world.  The program features Chattanooga State voice faculty, Dr. Amanda Hyberger, on Bernard Gilmore’s Five Folk Songs for Soprano and Band.  Enjoy a musical ride through the world of melody. The Symphonic Band is directed by Nicholas Hartline and includes students from the STEM School, Collegiate High, as well as community musicians.

Chattanooga State students of vocal and instrumental applied study will perform a recital of selected musical works of the classical, contemporary, and traditional American repertories.

Come enjoy performances by acting and musical theatre students, and see showcases of work by design/tech students.  Some scenes may include mature content not suitable for children.  Admission is free and open to the public.
