Hum 2

Welcome to the Humanities Department!

The Humanities can be described as the study of how people understand and record the human experience through language, philosophy, literature, art, music, or religion. An understanding of this human experience gives us a sense of connection to those who have come before us, as well as to our contemporaries. Through an exploration of the Humanities disciplines, we learn how to think critically, to express ourselves creatively, to reason, and to ask questions. Such explorations allow us to understand the great accomplishments of the past, help us navigate the present, and give us tools to embrace the future.

The Chattanooga State Community College Humanities Department offers a comprehensive multi-disciplinary program designed to meet your educational needs, whether you are earning an Associate’s degree, pursuing additional knowledge in a specific humanities discipline, or seeking to meet general education requirements. The Humanities Department is comprised of a highly qualified and diverse group of full-time and part-time faculty who work innovatively in support of our mission statement, our course offerings, our learning development resources, and our curricular expansion opportunities.

Our Mission Statement

The mission of the Chattanooga State Humanities and Fine Arts Division is to guide students in expanding their knowledge and understanding of the world around them and in developing the oral, written, and performance skills necessary to articulate that expanded worldview, thereby equipping them to function as better students in an academic community and as better citizens in the global community.
