Even though the weather has been unseasonably warm, the cold weather will be coming and when it does, those who experience homelessness need extra help. During October, the Student Life Department at Chattanooga State Community College challenged clubs and organizations to help “Cure the Cold,” but not in the traditional sense of the word.

Student Life organized “Cure the Cold” to collect clothing and toiletries for the homeless. By the end of the collection period, barrels, bags, and boxes were overflowing with items, both new and used. Requested new items included adult socks, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, and underwear. Gently used and items in good condition included blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, and adult-size rain jackets and winter coats. Collected items were delivered to Family Promise of Greater Chattanooga, Union Gospel Mission, and Chattanooga Room in the Inn.

“Chattanooga State has always strived to be active in the community, and with the ‘Cure the Cold’ event, it has given myself and other students a chance to give back to the less fortunate people in Chattanooga and the surrounding areas,” says Caleb Steinmetz, President of Activities Programming Board (APB). Event participants included more than 20 groups from Student Life, APB, SGA (Student Government Association), and ChattState clubs and organizations.

“The Cure the Cold event is a great opportunity for all clubs and organizations to unite for a shared goal of service, which will benefit those who are less fortunate in our Community,” states Dedric Maffett, Director of Student Activities.

Chattanooga State has more than 40 clubs and organizations that provide the campus with qualified student leaders and foster personal, social, career and leadership development opportunities.
