Tiny House Build Planned This Fall
April 4, 2016 | | Press Release
Chattanooga, TN (April 4, 2016) --- Dream Big, Go Tiny. This fall, students at Chattanooga State will have the opportunity to build a tiny house. Construction Engineering Technology program students will plan, schedule and ultimately build a tiny house based on plans donated by the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company (http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/). Caitlin Moffitt, Civil and Construction Engineering Technology faculty lead, will oversee the project.
Why a tiny house? “It will give students the opportunity to experience the full scope of a construction project on a small scale. They will be responsible for preconstruction planning (safety, estimating, scheduling, procurement) and ultimately the construction of the tiny house where they will learn fundamentals in framing, electrical, and plumbing. It will be a great marriage of classroom theory and hands-on lab,” says Moffitt.
The tiny house will feature two bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen, and a great room all in 117 square feet of space. The project will be completed as a part of student lab exercises in the core Construction ET courses - construction materials and methods, safety, scheduling and planning, and estimating. When the house is completed it will be open for tours and used as a marketing tool for the Construction Engineering Technology program.
