Dr. Kelly Denton-Borhaug Lectures at Chattanooga State on April 15
April 6, 2010 | | Press Release
Esteemed scholar and feminist theologian, Dr. Kelly Denton-Borhaug, will be speaking at Chattanooga State Community College on Thursday, April 15, at 7 p.m. The lecture, entitled “Co-opting Christian Sacrifice to Promote U.S. War Culture,” will be held in the college’s new Health Science Center in Room 1085 on Chattanooga State’s main campus. The event is open to the public free of charge.
Dr. Susan Stocker, professor of philosophy at Chattanooga State, is coordinating Dr. Denton-Borhaug’s visit. “Dr. Denton-Borhaug is an exceedingly captivating and provocative educator. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to host her at Chattanooga State, and we are pleased to invite the Chattanooga community to join us for a special lecture on Thursday, April 15. Both a scholar of Christianity and a “just war” pacifist, she will be sharing her intriguing and thoughtful perspective on how religious ideals and practices exploit, complicate and support a culture of war.”
Dr. Denton-Borhaug is presently a professor of religion at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Her educational background includes a bachelor of arts degree from California State University, a master of arts degree in divinity from Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary, and a doctoral degree from Graduate Theological Union, located in Berkeley, California. Concentrating on Christian images; understandings of salvation; feminist theology and ethics; and war and ethics, her current research considers the intersection between Christian understandings of sacrifice and sacrificial ideology in a war culture.
