Dr. Fannie Hewlett, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Chattanooga State Technical Community College, received the 2009 International Exemplary Leader Award during the Chair Academy’s 18th Annual International Conference for Postsecondary Leaders.  The Chair Academy, an organization dedicated to providing leadership training and development to postsecondary administrators, held its yearly conference on March 2‐5, 2009, in Nashville, Tennessee.

Nominated by their contemporaries, recipients of the prestigious International Exemplary Leader Award model an unparalleled dedication to their institutions, their colleagues, and the students they serve.  According to Dr. Donald Andrews, dean of humanities and fine arts at Chattanooga State, Dr. Hewlett’s leadership has advanced the college’s mission.  “Dr. Hewlett is an influential leader who has been a pivotal architect of the college’s commitment to excellence,” says Dr. Andrews.  “Her foresight has kept Chattanooga State at the forefront of educational initiatives that are progressive and effective.  She is worthy of this recognition because she clearly understands how to bridge the gap between leadership theory and practical application.”

Dr. Hewlett has been associated with Chattanooga State for more than 30 years.  Her career began in1976 at Cleveland State Community College in Cleveland, Tennessee, where she taught psychology.  In 1979, Dr. Hewlett joined the faculty of Chattanooga State as a professor of psychology, and in 1989, she accepted the position of department head for the social and behavioral sciences.  Dr. Hewlett was appointed dean of the Liberal Arts Division in 1993 and moved to dean of the Social and Behavioral Sciences Division in 1999.  She has been Chattanooga State’s provost and vice president for academic affairs since 2001.

Located in Mesa, Arizona, the Chair Academy began in 1992 as a grassroots movement that recognized the need for an organized training program for the vast number of midlevel managers working in higher education.  Focusing on leadership development, the Chair Academy is an internationally‐recognized association that designs and coordinates extensive training for academic and administrative leaders who are directing and supervising college faculty and staff.
