2011 ChattState Baseball Game Summaries
(Updated 2/9) The Tigers hosted Piedmont College on a cold, Tuesday afternoon. The first game put Sophomore Seth McClure on the mound for the Tigers. After a rough first inning, McClure settled down to throw 4 very nice innings and allowed only 1 unearned run. He struck out 3 and allowed 3 hits. After falling behind 1-0 in the first the Tigers scored 4 in the 2nd and 3 in the 3rd as the bats started warming up. Andrew Mayfield hit a big 3-run HR down the left field line and Zach Zarzour hit a ringing triple in the left-center gap to drive in 3 more. Piedmont battled back with 3 runs off of freshman Tripp White but freshman Dylan Massengill came on and threw the final 2 innings. The final score was 11-6 Tigers and this put them at 3-0 on the young season. The second game started off very well for the home team as Chase Riemer threw an outstanding first inning and the Tigers came in and plated 9 runs right off the bat!! Dylan Coleman, Brady Reed, Matt Sorrow were amongst those that got big hits. Piedmont scored 2 in the 3rd but the Tigers came back with 3 in the 4th and David Birch came on to throw the final inning. The final score was 13-2 Tigers and this puts the #18 ranked Tigers at 4-0. Riemer ended up allowing 2 runs with 3 strikeouts in getting the win. The next games are Saturday as the Tigers host Georgia Perimeter College at 1 pm.
The 2011 season opened up for the Tigers of Chattanooga State hosting the Cardinals of Gadsden State at home. This was the first HOME GAME for the Tigers since May of 2009. After having won the conference and district titles last year without playing a true home game, the Tigers facility is nearly completed. On a sunny Sunday afternoon the Tigers got ready to "kick-start" their 2011 season. The Tigers put transfer sophomore Patrick Merkling on the mound and he responded with 3+ innings of solid pitching. He struck out 4 and walked no one while allowing 3 hits and 3 runs. Mark Harris and Jeremy Bales came on to finish out the game. The Tigers fell behind 3-0 in the 3rd inning and scored a run in the 5th on a single by Zack Zarzour and a single later in the inning by JD Pullen. The Cardinals scored again to make it 4-1 and then the Tigers got going. In the 6th, they scored 2 runs behind hits by Zeth Stone, Tyler Roach and Andrew Mayfield. In the 7th still trailing by 1 run they scored a run and left the bases loaded. Dylan Coleman drove in the run. In the 8th inning, Bryan Lewis led off with a ringing double down the line and moved to 3B on a bunt single by Zack Zarzour and then scored on Gabe Herman's sac fly. The 2nd game was more of the same as Sophomore Max Aeschlimann took the mound. Aeschlimann was one of the outstanding freshmen last year who helped guide the Tigers to their first ever JUCO World Series appearance. Max delivered 4 2/3 innings of very good pitching as he allowed 3 hits and2 runs. Freshman Chad Kirby came on in relief and got the save as the Tigers won 4-3. The Tigers plated 2 runs in the first inning as Gabe Herman and JD Pullen led off with singles and stolen bases. The Cardinals came back and scored 2 in the 3rd and the Tigers answered back with 1 in the 3rd as Pullen walked and stole another base and came on to score on Zeth Stone's sac fly. With the game knotted, the Tigers managed to score 1 more in the 5th inning to take a lead. Herman walked and was moved around on Pullen's 5th hit of the day and scored on Coleman's sacrifice fly. The Cardinals made a run at another rally but the Tigers held on to get the win. The Tigers will play Piedmont College JV on Tuesday at 1 pm ( DH ).
2010 Tigers Baseball Game Summary ( Season continues below )
The 2010 baseball season has already opened up and the Tigers are busy on the road playing games since their home field is in the process of being renovated. With new dugouts, backstop, grandstands, press box, fieldhouse, irrigation and lights going in, it promises to be one of the nicest facilities in the region. The season began with a 3-game sweep at Hiwassee College where Josh Coppinger, Matt Taylor and Will Phillips combined to hold the Hiwassee club to 3 runs for the 3 games and the ChattState Tigers scored over 40 runs.
The Tigers were then off to Gadsden State where they won 8-5 and 15-4. Brandon O'Dell and Max Aeschlimann got the wins and Zack DeBord, Dylan Coleman and Michael Maxwell all had big days at the plate for the Tigers. The Tigers then travelled down to Douglas Georgia to play the South Georgia Tigers. South Georgia won the first game 12-10 as DeBord and Coppinger ran in to a little trouble on the bump. Dylan Coleman and Gabe Herman each had 3 hits as the Tigers continued to pound the baseball at the plate. On Saturday the visiting Tigers again came up short as they lost 8-6 as Jordan Hinson took the loss on the mound. Michael Maxwell had 3 hits and Herman and Coleman each had 2. In the 2nd game of the day against USC Salkahatchie, the Tigers won 12-2 as Will Phillips threw a gem of a game and the Tigers just kept hitting. Andy Marinelli, Zack DeBord, Gabe Herman and Dylan Coleman all had 2 hits and Michael Maxwell had 3.
The Tigers then went to Athens Tennessee to take on Tennessee Wesleyan JV and won 13-0 and 7-1. Tyler Burstrom won the first game and Josh Coppinger got the win in the 2nd game. Dylan Coleman, Taylor Eaves and Zack DeBord had 3 hit games and this pushed the Tigers record to 8-2 overall.
Conference opened with the Tigers hosting the Eagles of Dyersburg at Covenant College. The Tigers won the first game 5-4 in a nail-biter as Tyler Burstrom came in relief and won as the Tigers scored 2 in the 6th inning to go ahead. Zack DeBord had a 2 hit game and a huge double in the 6th inning. The Tigers won the second game 6-5 as it went 10 innings and Burstrom got the win in it also. DeBord continued his hot hitting with 2 hits and Isaac Davenport also had 2 while Gabe Herman chipped in 3 hits.
The Tigers didn't play until the next Friday as they went up to Cleveland to play the Cougars a 3-game series. On Friday the Tigers lost 11-7 as DeBord got hit around some early and the Tigers tried to play "catch-up" the better part of the day. Max Aeschlimann came in and threw well in relief as did Josh Coppinger and Herman, Marinelli and Coleman all had multi-hit days. On Saturday, the Tigers came out with a purpose and won both games and the series. The first game Matt Taylor spun a gem as he went 5 innings and allowed 3 hits and 2 runs. Tyler Burstrom came in and threw the final 2 innings to get the save. Adam Whitlock, Zack DeBord and JD Pullen all hit solo HR's in the game and the Tigers held the Cougars at bay offensively. Game 3 was another tough match as Will Phillips gave up a 3 run HR in the first inning to Cleveland State. The Tigers bounced back though in the 3rd and scored 6 runs of their own. From there, it yo-yo-yoed back and forth between both teams scoring and the Tigers held on to win 13-8. Josh Coppinger and Tyler Burstrom threw much needed relief innings and 6 different Tigers each had 2 hits. This puts the Tigers record at 12-3 and 4-1 in conference.
The Tigers went over to Historic Engel Stadium to play Tennessee Temple on Monday the 8th and won two hard-fought games. This was an opportunity to play some different players for the Tigers and give some of the pitchers that haven't thrown an opportunity to get much needed work. The first game saw Brandon Elrod and Jordan Hinson go 3 innings a piece and give up 3 runs all unearned. The Tigers took a while to get going offensively but finally they did. JD Pullen and Gabe Herman each had 3 hit games and Pullen also had 3 RBI's. 2 of Pullen's RBI's came in the top of the 9th as he drove in the winning runs with a 2 out double. Ryan Mullins got the win in relief and Josh Coppinger got the save. Game 2 was much of the same as Brandon O'Dell struggled through 3 innings allowing only 1 hit but walking 5. With the game tied 1-1 the Tigers exploded for a 5 run 4th inning. From there the proceeded to cruise through to the win. Dylan Coleman had 3 hits and Michael Maxwell, Zack DeBord, Adam Whitlock and Garrett Lovelace all had 2 hits. Ryan Mullins picked up his second win of the day in relief and Jordan Hinson came in and got the save, his second of the young season. The Tigers now go to Columbia State for a Conference doubleheader on Saturday.
The Tigers traveled out to Columbia, Tennessee to take on the Chargers of Columbia State. Coach Mike Corn's team has started off really well in conference and it was obvious they were much more ready to play than the visiting ChattState Tigers. The first game put lefty Matt Taylor on the mound for the Tigers and he delivered a 5 inning pitched, 3 run / 7 strikeout outing. Unfortunately, the Tigers forgot to pack their bats for the game as the Columbia twirler pitched a 7-hit shutout against them. Gabe Herman and Dylan Coleman each had 2 hits but the Tigers fell 3-0 to the Chargers. Game 2 looked like much of the same as ChattState's Will Phillips threw 7 2/3 innings of great ball. He allowed 7 hits and walked no one and left the game with a 4-2 lead. The Chargers put up a fuss at the end as they scored one in the 9th and only some late-innings heroics from Andy Marinelli and Tyler Burstrom subdued the energized Chargers. The Tigers were happy to leave Columbia with a split and didn't necessarily deserve that, if truth be told. The Tigers travel to Demorest, Georgia to take on Piedmont College on Tuesday and then on to Harriman, Tennessee to take on the resurgent Roane State baseball team.
Chattanooga State travelled down to Demorest, Georgia on a gorgeous Tuesday afternoon and took on the Lions of Piedmont College ( JV ). It is always such a pleasure to go down and play there as they have an outstanding facility and wonderful staff to work with. Brandon Elrod pitched the first game and went 4 2/3 innings of superb ball. He walked no one and struck out 4 while allowing only 1 run. The Tigers jumped off to a 7-1 lead and never looked back as they cruised to a 12-1 win. Zack DeBord had 3 hits and 3 RBI's while Andy Marinelli also chipped in 3 hits. Gabe Herman, Dyland Coleman and Michael Maxwell all had 2 hits. The second game was much closer as starter Brandon O'Dell struggled with some control issues but freshman Seth McClure came in and delivered 4 good innings of relief. McClure allowed only 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 3 Lion hitters. He left with the score of the game at 6-1 and then the Lions came back to cut into the lead and make it 6-3 off some bad luck to Jordan Hinson in relief. Tyler Burstrom came on and got his 3rd save of the season and threw the final inning and the Tigers loaded back up on the bus and headed home from a long day. The Tigers' record stands at 17-4 overall and with these all being on the road, that is truly a remarkable record thus far. Next games will be Friday ( 2 pm ) and Saturday ( 12 pm ) at Roane State CC in Harriman, Tennessee.
The Tigers rolled in to Harriman and won 3 games from the Raiders of Roane State. Max Aeschlimann threw outstandingly in relief on Friday and garnered the win with 4 stellar innings. Will Phillips spun the "gem" of the weekend with a 4 hit shutout against the Raiders as he struck out 10 and didn't walk a hitter. Tyler Burstrom tied up the package with a neat bow and held the Raiders to 2 runs as the Tigers again outscored their opponent. Big series at the plate came from Michael Maxwell, Jeremy Fitzgerald, Andy Whitlock and Dylan Coleman as they all had big games and hits. The Tigers now push up to 20-4 overall and 8-2 in conference with a doubleheader coming up with Shorter College on Wednesday.
Chattanooga State rolled in to Rome, Georgia on Wednesday under the blue skies and won 2 ball games. Brandon Elrod threw his second solid outing in a row as he spun a 5 inning shutout. He struck out 5 and limited them to 4 hits. The Tigers started scoring early and often as they routed Shorter's JV 15-0. Jeremy Fitzgerald had 3 hits while Gabe Herman, Zack DeBord, and Dylan Coleman all pitched in 2 hits. DeBord also drove in 5 RBI's in the game, while Fitzgerald had 3. Game 2 was a closer one and Shorter came out swinging the bats well. The Tigers plated 5 in the first inning but gave up 2 in the bottom of the inning. After trading 2-spots in the 2nd inning, the Tigers allowed a solo run in the third to make the game 7-5 Tigers. Finally, they started scoring in the 6th and blew it open. Ryan Mullins, Brandon O'Dell, Zack DeBord and Zack Phillips all pitched well and held Shorter at bay towards the end of the game. Gabe Herman and Adam Whitlock each had 4 hits and Andy Marinelli, Zack DeBord, Dylan Coleman and Isaac Davenport each chipped in 2 hits. Coleman, Whitlock and Davenport also drove home 3 runs a piece. The final score was 13-5 Tigers and this puts their record at 22-4 overall. The next opponent will be Volunteer State on Saturday at noon on Covenant College's baseball field.
The Tigers took on the "red-hot" Pioneers of Vol State on Saturday at Covenant College's field. The day was blue skied and pretty but VERY windy and somewhat cold. The Pioneers jumped off on starter Matt Taylor for a tally in the 2nd inning and then the Tigers came back and scored 3 in the bottom of the 2nd inning as Adam Whitlock, Taylor Eaves and Gabe Herman all had key hits. Taylor struggled again in the 3rd inning and allowed 2 more runs to tie the game up at 3-all. The Pioneers hit a solo HR off of reliever Max Aeschlimann in the 5th inning and withstood a furious Tiger rally in the 7th inning where they stranded runners on 2nd and 3rd base with 2 outs and Zack DeBord at the plate. DeBord struck out and the game ended 4-3 Vol State. Game 2 put Will Phillips on the bump for the Tigers and he delivered 4 2/3 innings of somewhat solid pitching. Not at his best by any means but he competed well and stayed out of big trouble. He left the game and the score was 5-3 Tigers. Reliever Josh Coppinger ran in to a bit of bad luck as he allowed 2 runs in the 5th on balls past the catcher. The Tigers chipped away with solo runs in the 5th and 6th to make the score 7-5 and then when Tyler Burstrom pitched out of a jam in the 8th inning, the Tiger bats came alive. They scored 8 runs in the 8th inning, 7 of them with 2-outs. JD Pullen had 4 hits for the game and Taylor Eaves, Adam Whitlock and Matt Holden all chipped in 2 hits a piece. The final score was 15-5 and this pushes the Tigers to 23-5 overall and 9-3 in conference. Their next games are in Barnesville, Ga against always difficult Gordon College.
After the Tigers took two tough losses at Gordon College, they hosted the Saluqis of Southwest TN CC. The Tigers beat the boys from Memphis 9-3 and 14-0. The first game put Will Phillips on the hill and he delivered his 6th win of the season. He went 4+ innings and threw really well and then turned the game over to Jordan Hinson who threw well also. The Tigers jumped off to a 5-0 lead and then when it was cut into, they hit 3 homers in 4 batters. Dylan Coleman, Adam Whitlock and JD Pullen hit the three HR's. The second game saw freshman Max Aeschlimann twirl a gem as he went 7 innings and threw a shutout allowing 4 hits. The Tigers again jumped out to 9 runs in the first two innings and then tacked on 5 more in the 6th to force the run-rule in the 7th inning. Every Tiger had a least a hit and 5 had 2 hits in the game. The Tigers now get ready to take on the Chattanooga Lookouts ( LA Dodgers Double A team ) this coming Tuesday at AT&T Field. Game time is 7:15 pm. After this the Tigers take on Nationally Ranked Walters State on Friday and Saturday.
The Chattanooga State baseball team took on the Double A affiliate for the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Chattanooga Lookouts, on Tuesday night at AT&T Field and it was a wonderful evening of baseball and friends. The Tigers came out and Andy Marinelli hit a 2-out double but was left stranded as Zack DeBord grounded out. The Lookouts drove in 2 runs off of starter Brandon Elrod and then followed that up with 5 runs in the second off of Tyler Burstrom and Josh Coppinger. They tallied 3 more in the third as Coppinger was the beneficiary of some miscues. Down 10-0, the Tigers scratched across a run to make it 10-1. Dylan Coleman, Adam Whitlock, Brandon Cochran, JD Pullen and Gabe Herman all had big hits for the Tigers. Zack DeBord came on and threw 1 2/3 innings of sterling relief and Jordan Hinson chipped in a solid inning also. Brandon O'Dell got 2 outs in the 6th and then Seth McClure cleaned up the last out. The final score was 11-1 Lookouts but the Tigers enjoyed a GREAT night at the ballpark and are so appreciative to the Dodgers Organization for allowing us to play the Lookouts and to Frank Burke and the FINE Lookouts staff and organization for making this night an enormous success for everyone involved in the Tigers program. The Tigers will take on the Senators of Walters State on Friay and Saturday in Morristown.
The Tigers rolled in to nationally ranked Walters State's field looking to try and contend with the hometown Senators. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be as the Senators did what they needed to do to hold off the Tigers. In Game one, the Tigers jumped off to an early 1-0 lead as Isaac Davenport hit a triple followed by Andy Marinelli's double. The Senators came back and scored 5 runs over 4 innings off of starter Matt Taylor. The Tigers tried to mount some rallies but couldn't gather enough momentum and eventually lost 8-2. Game two was a pitcher's dual as Tigers starter, Will Phillips, gave up 2 runs in the first and then held down the vaunted Senator line up for the next 4 innings. The Tigers scored one run on Taylor Eaves' inside-the-park HR in the 3rd inning. The Senators broke it open in the bottom of the 6th as they scored 5 runs and escaped with a 7-1 victory. The 3rd game was much of the same as the Tigers and Senators were scoreless for 5 innings. Starter Max Aeschlimann threw really well for the Tigers and faltered a little in the 6th as the Senators scored 5 runs. The never-say-die Tigers rallied in the top of the 7th and scored 3 runs on a Taylor Eaves HR and then put runners on 1st and 2nd base with one out but couldn't get the clinching hit. Andy Marinelli scorched a line-drive to CF and the game ended 5-3. The Tigers will host Gadsden State CC at Ridgeland HS on Tuesday at 1 pm for a double header.
The Tigers took on the Cardinals of Gadsden State CC at Ridgeland HS in Flintstone, Georgia. The high school facility is certainly one of the finest in the north Georgia area and we were pleased to be able to play there. The Tigers won a hard-fought game 15-11 as they basically just outscored the Cardinals. Pitching was tough to come by and the Tigers fought through some difficult outings. Brandon Elrod started and didn't have his usual stuff for 4 innings. Jordan Hinson followed him and struggled some also but reliable Josh Coppinger came on and threw 2 1/3 innings of superb relief. Ryan Mullins chipped in a brief effort and then Tyler Burstrom slammed the door shut. The Tigers offense was "sizzling" as they had over 15 hits for the game. Michael Maxwell had 3 hits while Gabe Herman, Andy Marinelli, Adam Whitlock and Dylan Coleman all had 2 hits a piece and JD Pullen and Taylor Eaves each hit a home run. The Tigers will now take on Motlow State CC on Friday at 2 pm at Ridgeland HS. They will then play their doubleheader on Saturday at noon at Lee Universit
The Tigers took on the red-hot Bucks of Motlow State at Ridgeland HS in Georgia and didn't fare as well there as they did on Tuesday. They came out on the short end of an 8-4 loss. Starter Max Aeschlimann threw 6 strong innings and left with the score knotted at 4-all. Unfortunately, usually reliable reliever, Josh Coppinger ran into trouble and allowed 4 runs over the last 3 innings and the Tigers couldn't mount much of a comeback offensively. Zack DeBord had a double and a Home Run and Gabe Herman also had two hits but the Tigers fell short. Games 2 and 3 moved over to Lee University and that site was much more to the Tigers liking in terms of victories. The Tigers won both games 6-4 and 10-0 and responded well to the Bucks challenges. Starter Will Phillips came out like a house on fire and struck out the side in the first inning and the Tigers bolted out for 3 runs. The Bucks fought back and scored 4 in the 3rd inning off of Phillips as he began to falter a little bit but he toughed it out and got through 5 innings. The Tigers came back to tie the game in the 5th inning and score 2 runs in the 6th inning to go into the lead and Tyler Burstrom came in and got his 6th save of the season by striking out the side in the 7th. Josh Coppinger got the win in relief in this game. Game 3 was just all Burstrom as he continued on his torrid pace and threw a complete game victory. He allowed 2 hits and on walk while striking out 4 more Bucks. The Tigers did all of their offensive damage in the 3rd inning as they threw up a 10-spot on the Bucks. For the day the Tigers were lead by Dylan Coleman, Zack Debord, Andy Marinelli, and Adam Whitlock with 2 hits a piece and JD Pullen and Gabe Herman with 3 hits for the doubleheader. Next games are Monday at Shorter College at 2 pm.
The Tigers swept a doubleheader at Shorter College to push their record up even further. Brandon Elrod spun a wonderful 1-hitter in the second game and won the game 2-0. The Tigers then went to Jackson, Tennessee to play Jackson State with the opportunity with a victory to secure 2nd place in the TCCAA conference. The Tigers won the first game 2-1 as freshman Max Aeschlimann continued to throw outstandingly. He went 5.3 innings and allowed no earned runs. He came out of the game and Josh Coppinger and Tyler Burstrom finished up the game for him. Burstrom got the save for his effort. The second game didn't fair as well for the Tigers as they jumped out to a 4-1 lead but then let Jackson storm back to go up 6-4 on a grand slam. The Tigers tried to come back but were left behind and lost 11-6. Jordan Hinson got the loss and the Tigers ended the regular season at a 31-12 overall record and a 14-8 conference mark. They finished 2nd in the conference for the 2nd time in 5 years. The next games will be at Dyersburg in the Conference tournament.
CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT
Chattanooga State took on a red-hot hitting Volunteer State team in the first game of the conference tournament. The Pioneers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but in what would become an ongoing theme, the Tigers roared back and scored 10 unanswered runs over the next 5 innings. Max Aeschlimann threw 6 and 2/3 innings of solid ball and Josh Coppinger and Tyler Burstrom cleaned up the rest for a 10-2 victory. Gabe Herman, Michael Maxwell and Isaac Davenport all had 2 hits in the game and Herman and Maxwell each had 2 RBI's. The next game pitted "down-the-road" rival Cleveland State against the Tigers. Tyler Burstrom took the mound for this one and delivered 8 great innings of 2 earned runs pitching. The game was knotted at 2 till the 7th when Cleveland scratched across a run to go up 3-2. In the bottom of the 9th inning with 1 out the Tigers mounted a rally started by Taylor Eaves' single and then Isaac Davenport's single. After a strikeout and a stolen base, the runners were on 2nd and 3rd when an infield single scored one run and an error on the play scored the other and the Tigers held on in the bottom of the 9th to win 4-3. JD Pullen and Andy Marinelli each had 2 hits and Josh Coppinger got the save. In the winner's bracket finals game, the weather turned unseasonably cold as did the Tigers pitching and hitting early. The VERY red-hot Dyersburg State Eagles jumped out on the Tigers to a 9-1 lead through 5 innings. The Tigers looked dead-in-the-water until the 6th when Zack DeBord hit a 3-run HR. As reliever Matt Taylor settled down and began putting down the Eagles, the Tigers bats started to heat up. They scored a solo run in the 7th to make it 9-5 and then 2 more runs in the 8th to close the gap more and then the big blow was a 3-run HR by Adam Whitlock in the 9th inning. The Tigers went on to score one more run and then held on ( the next day due to lightning ) and win 11-9. This put the Tigers against the #3 ranked Walters State Senators in a "must-win" game for the Senators and not the Tigers. The Senators won 10-6 against a very hard-playing Tigers team. After the Senators eliminated the Eagles of Dyersburg, this set up one final game for the championship. The Senators came out hard and got ahead, knocking out starter Aeschlimann in the 2nd, by a score of 8-3 in the 5th but AGAIN the Tigers came storming back with 7 runs in the 6th inning as they batted around. The Senators tied the game at 10-all but the Tigers scored 1 run in the 7th and 1 run in the 8th and Jordan Hinson came on in the 9th inning to record the 3 outs and the celebration was on!!! Another conference title after having won the first one in school history only 3 short years ago!! What a great testimony to a team that STILL hasn't played a single game on it's home field all season!! The Tigers will now travel to Barnesville, Georgia to take on yet ANOTHER red-hot team in the Gordon College Highlanders. The series will begin on Friday and go on through Saturday and then Sunday ( if necessary ).
DISTRICT TOURNAMENT
2009 Tigers Baseball Game Summary
February 7th vs. Guilford Technical CC
The spring of 2009 finally dawned with great weather on Chattanooga State's season opener against Guilford Tech out of North Carolina. The Tigers put Sophomore Brian Satterfield on the hill to start the first game and he delivered well. While he threw 4 shutout innings to begin the game, the Tigers offense scored 5 runs in the first 3 innings. Ryan Williams led off the bottom of the first inning with a 0-2 home run to left field. In the 2nd inning Garret Burgess walked and was moved to 3B on Aaron Shorts rocket to right field. After a strikeout, Burgess scored on a nifty double steal. Then Jacob Price singled and advanced on an error and scored on Williams' double to center field. In the 3rd inning, Daniel Merck led off with a double to right field and then moved over on a fielder's choice and scored on Andy Marinelli's sacrifice fly ball. Burgess also followed with a double and scored Dexter Scugins who had gotten on earlier on the fielder's choice. This ended the scoring and while Guilford scored 2 later in the game, Josh Coppinger and Will Phillips closed it out for a 5-2 victory.
Game two put freshman, Kevin McDonald, on the hill and he threw a solid 3 2/3 innings. He allowed 2 hits and no runs. The Tigers scored 1 in the 3rd inning as Ryan Williams got on base on an error. He stole second and third base and then scored on Daniel Merck's single with 2 outs. Guilford scored in the 6th inning to tie the game off of reliever Jaron Hollifield. Josh Coppinger again came in and allowed nothing while the Tigers scored 1 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Andy Marinelli led off with a ringing double to center field and after a couple of intentional walks, Daniel Merck double to right field to end the game. Will Phillips picked up the win by recording the last out of the 7th inning.
Game 3 was another tough match as Sophomore Corey Davidson took the mound for the Tigers and twirled a gem. He went 5 innings and allowed 2 hits and struck out 9 batters. The Tigers got on the board in the 4th as Daniel Merck singled and then Dexter Scudgins did the same. An error on the play put them at 2nd and 3rd and then Adam Whitlock hit a ringing single to right field to score one. Aaron Short promptly stepped up and slammed a 3-run home run to left field to put the Tigers up 4-0. Quality pitching closed it out for the Tigers as Australian Travis Murphy threw 3 shut out innings and freshman Tyler Burstrom closed the game with a shutout 9th inning. Final score: 4-0 and the Tigers start off 2009 with a 3-0 record. Guilford was a quality opponent and the Tigers really gained some "conference caliber" experience from them. Next game is Tuesday at Georgia Perimeter and then Friday / Saturday at Volunteer State.
February 23-24 at Walters State
The ChattState Tigers rolled in to cloudy and cold Morristown to take on the always tough nationally ranked Senators of Walters State. Ken Campbell's boys are always the front runners for the conference title and this year is no different as they jumped off to a 3-0 conference start. The Tigers put sophomore Coty Green on the mound to face the "salty" batting order of the Senators and Coty performed admirably. The game was scoreless for 2 innings and then the Senators broke through for 4 runs in the 3rd inning behind a couple of hits and a home run. The Tigers fired right back with 3 of their own with Heath Cheverton hitting a lead off triple to right center field and then Beau Geren walking. Bren Schuehler brought in Cheverton and moved Geren up on a fielder's choice and then after a strike out Garret Burgess and Edwin Borbon each double down the right field line. The Senators scored 2 more in the 5th and then broke the game open with 6 unearned runs in the 6th. The Tigers scored one more in the 7th as Seve Alvarez singled and then was brought home with a double to right center field by Geren. This finished the scoring and what was a close game ended 12-4.
Game 2 started afterwards and with Coach Robert Long leading the Tigers due to Coach Dennis' ejection in the first game, things got interesting. Bren Schuehler took the mound for the Tigers and after the Tigers didn't score in the top of the 1st the Senators wasted little time getting going gone Schuehler. They plated 3 runs in the first behind 3 walks and a home run. The Tigers fired back again with 2 runs behind a 2 out walk and error and then a big 2 run scoring double by Scotty Guest. The Senators scored again in the second and the Tigers were blanked in the 3rd, when in the bottom of the inning with 1 out and 1 on Coach Long was inexplicably "tossed" from the game and the Tigers had to forfeit due to both coaches being ejected. So it ended 4-2 Walters State.
Game three was on Sunday and a nicer day on the whole. Zach Driggers took the mound and delivered a sterling performance as he went 6.33 innings and allowed only 3 runs on 5 hits and struck out 7. The Senators hit a solo HR in the first inning and then there was no scoring until they put another 2-spot up in the 5th inning. The Tigers finally answered in the 6th inning as both Cheverton and Geren reached on infield errors and then after a wild pitch, Jeremy Fitzgerald drove in one with an infield out. Then Coty Green delivered a single to right field to score the other. The Tigers took the lead in the 8th inning as they scored two runs behind a double by Green to lead off the inning and then a sacrifice bunt and an infield single by Scott Guest. Seve Alvarez hit another infield single and then Ryan Williams reached via an error and Heath Cheverton walked to drive in another run. Beau Geren struck out on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning with the sacks loaded. The Senators hit another solo HR in the bottom of the 8th inning to tie the game and then manufactured a run in the 9th to win it after the Tigers hadn't scored. The final score was 5-4 and the Tigers left Morristown without a victory in the series.
March 1st vs. Columbia State
After a long week off with no games, the Tigers took on the Chargers of Columbia State at home. The Tigers put Coty Green on the mound and he delivered a solid outing. After a scoreless 1st inning the Chargers scored 1 in the second and 1 in the 3rd inning. The Tigers answered back with 4 in the bottom of the third inning as Jeremy Fitzgerald singled and was followed by a walk to Severino Alvarez and back to back doubles by Heath Cheverton and Beau Geren. An infield out and a wild pitch plated Geren so the Tigers were up 4-2. Unfortunately, the Chargers came back with a 2-out 2-run HR in the 5th and then added 2 more in the 6th to build a 6-4 lead. The Tigers attempted a rally, but it fell short and they lost 6-4.
Game 2 started off with the Chargers scoring 2 in the first but the Tigers came back with 1 in the first and 2 in the second inning. In the first, Ryan Williams led off with a double and was plated by a wild pitch then a fielders choice by Heath Cheverton. In the second inning, Dexter Scudgins doubled and after an Edwin Borbon single and a fielder's choice, Jeremy Fitzgerald hit a big double to right center field. The Chargers scored 1 in the 4th inning and then exploded for 3 in the 5th inning off of freshman Corey Davidson. The Tigers answered in the 6th inning with 5 runs as a walk and an error opened the door and then Garret Burgess, Fitzgerald, and Ryan Williams all singled before a sacrifice fly by Cheverton and a booming triple by Geren built a bigger lead. Lee Henry came in relief of Bradden Scott and secured the save with a solid 7th inning. The 8-6 victory was a good one for the Tigers and set them up for their non-conference tilt with Maryville College on Monday at home.
March 9th at Motlow State
The Tigers "weathered" some bad weather and finally got to play in Lynchburg against an always tough foe in Motlow State. Coty Green took the mound for the first game and he wasn't greeted well by the home team. After a walk to the leadoff hitter the second hole hitter stroked a 1-strike home run to left field. In the second inning after another uneventful at bat by the Tigers Motlow again plated two runs to make the score 4-0. Zach Driggers came on in the 4th inning and threw 3 scoreless innings allowing only 1 hit but unfortunately the damage was done. In the 5th inning the Tigers mounted a rally behind a single by Edwin Borbon and another by Garret Burgess. After a bunt moved them, Ryan Williams lined out to right-field to score Borbon but Burgess was left stranded on the third out. The Tigers tried to create a comeback in the 7th but it was snuffed out by a double play. Final score: Motlow 4 ChattState 1
Game two put Lee Henry on the mound for the Tigers in the unusual role of starter. Henry has been an unbelievable closer for the past year or so but with the needs of quality starts, we decided to put him in this new role. He delivered 6 innings of great pitching to give us a chance to win the game. The Tigers scored one in the 2nd inning as Clay Hindman walked and was moved over on a fielder's choice and then scored with two outs on Pat Jones' single. Motlow answered back with a run of it's own in the bottom half and then the Tigers scored 2 more in the 6th inning as Bren Schuehler led off the inning with a long HR to centerfield. Jordan Dean then ripped a double to right-center field and was moved over on a bunt and then scored on Pat Jones' fielder's choice. Motlow again answered with two runs as Henry began to tire some. In the 7th inning, the Tigers finally blew it open with 4 runs as Heath Cheverton singled and was moved over on an error. After a walk, Borbon laid down a perfect bunt and the bases were loaded. Jordan Dean hit his second double of the day to plate two runs and then Clay Hindman hit a sacrifice fly to score another. Pat Jones concluded the scoring with an infield single and then Bradden Scott came on to close the game with a 3-up / 3-down 7th inning. Final score: ChattState 7 Motlow State 3.
March 11th vs. Piedmont College
The Tigers bounced back from a late night in Maryville and took on Piedmont at home. Corey Davidson took the mound and threw 4 scoreless innings as he allowed 2 hits and 1 walk while striking out 3. Jordan Dean took over for him and pitched the remaining 3 innings while allowing no runs and 3 hits while striking out 5. Dean took the win 2-0 to run his record to 2-0 on the season. The Tigers didn't hit the ball particularly well at all and Heath Cheverton got them on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning with a 2-out, 2-run Home Run to left field. The defense was stellar and with good pitching this led to a victory for the Tigers.
Game 2 put hot-pitching Bradden Scott on the mound but he struggled in his one inning. After allowing 2 hits and a walk with no outs he pitched out of the jam and allowed no runs. Lewis Dortch took over for him and the freshman from North Carolina threw 3 sparkling innings allowing no runs and no hits. Dane Anderson followed and the freshman from Gordon Lee HS threw 2 innings while allowing 1 run and striking out 3. John Howard came on and threw the final inning allowing no runs and getting the save. The Tigers won another squeaker 4-1 and run their record to 14-7. In the 3rd inning they scored 2 runs as Heath Cheverton hit a single and after stealing a base was plated by Jeremy Fitzgerald. After a stolen base, Fitzgerald scored on a Beau Geren single. Again, in the 5th inning, the Tigers scored 2 more runs as Fitzgerald was hit by pitch and then scored on Beau Geren's double to left field. Geren scored on Coty Green's 2-out double to left field also. The final score was Chattanooga State 4-1. The next game will be at home vs. Dyersburg State on Friday and Saturday.
March 18th at Gadsden State
The Tigers rolled into Gadsden, Alabama and tried to get their season back on track with a tough non-conference game. The Tigers jumped on the Cardinals in the first inning for a run as Heath Cheverton led off with a ringing single up the middle and then Jeremy Fitzgerald was hit by pitch. After a sacrifice bunt, Blake Hixson drove in a run with an infield out. Chad Reeves started for the Tigers and threw a shutout first three innings as the Tigers scored another run in the third inning. Again, Cheverton singled and Fitzgerald walked and then Beau Geren got on on an infield single. Blake Hixson got the run in with another infield out but the rally stalled there. In the 4th inning, the Tigers blew the game open with a 6 run inning. Garret Burgess led off with a double and then after a walk, Scott Guest got an infield single. Cheverton ripped his third single to plate one run and then after Fitzgerald made the first out, Geren scorched a triple to dead center field. He later scored on the back-end of a double steal. Corey Davidson came on and threw 3 more scoreless innings as the Tigers tacked on 4 more runs in the 7th. Big hits by Short, Guest and Geren again led to the runs as Geren finished the game with 6 RBI's for the day. Brian Satterfield came on and threw a scoreless 7th inning and the Tigers walked out with a 12-0 win. The next games are at Roane State on Thursday and Friday.
March 24 at Shorter College
The Tigers went down to Rome Georgia to play the Hawks of Shorter College's JV. Though it was cold and snowy there the games went well. Game one saw the Tigers jump out to an early lead and Lewis Dortch throw very well. Dortch threw a 1-hitter and struck out 6 hitters while the Tigers won 14-0. Heath Cheverton had 3 hits and 3 RBI's and Garret Burgess also had 3 hits. Game two was a much closer affair and if not for the superb pitching of Chad Reeves the outcome may have been negative. Reeves threw a complete game allowing 7 hits and striking out 8. He and Dortch both ran their record to 3-0 on the season. The Tigers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings but the Hawks came back with 3 runs of their own through the 5th inning and then the Tigers scored 1 more insurance run in the 7th and Reeves closed the game out with a strong 7th inning. The final score was 6-3 Tigers.
April 6th and 7th at Motlow State CC ( 2007 Season )
The #1 ranked Tigers rolled into Lynchburg Tennessee to take on the always formidable Bucks of Motlow State and battled on two very cold Middle Tennessee days. With the temperatures dipping into the high 30's and the wind blowing in, it was a pair of tough days to play. Game one put 9 game winner Thomas Gray on the mound against the hard-hitting Bucks and he threw wonderfully as he allowed only 3 hits and 1 walk while shutting them out 8-0. Gray pushes his record up to 10-0 on the year and has begun to entrench himself as one of the top pitchers in Chattanooga State history. The game was scoreless through 5 innings as the Tigers struggled themselves to get any offense going. Finally in the 6th inning Trey Burstrom singled and after being forced out by a Nate Rochester fielder's choice and a fly out, Beau Geren reached on an error and Coty Green drove in both with a 2-out, 2-strike single to right. In the 7th, the Tigers broke it open with 5 runs as after 2 outs Heath Cheverton singled and Burstrom walked then Rochester singled and Kendal Wells doubled and Beau Geren crushed a long Home Run to left field. Trey Burstrom hit a solo HR to close out the scoring in the 9th inning and the Tigers won 8-0.
Game 2 began much the same way as neither team scored in the first inning. Drew Bowlin started for the Tigers and with the exception of one hiccup, threw a great game. The Bucks scored 4 in the 2nd inning as Bowlin walked a hitter and then an infield error opened the door. Another walk and then a pair of strikeouts followed. Nearly out of the inning, 2 base hits scored some runs and then a HBP did more damage. The Tigers came back with 3 in the 5th inning as Beau Geren doubled and Coty Green singled and Alex Henry did the same with one out. Michael Rangel singled also and Heath Cheverton hit a sacrifice fly to plate another but that was all for the inning. In the 7th inning with the score 4-3 Bucks, the Tigers mounted one more rally. Geren singled and then Green moved him to 2B with an infield out. After a walk to Michael Gay, Henry lined out to center field and then Rangel hit a rope to right-center field and the Bucks right fielder made a stunning diving catch to save the game. Bowlin ended up with 5 innings pitched and 13 strikeouts but lost to move his record to 4-2.
Game 3 has been a solid game for the Tigers in the past but they stumbled some again. 3-time Conference Pitcher of the Week, Coty Green, took the mound for the Tigers and threw well enough to win, but didn't due to a lack of offense. The Bucks again got out on top with 3 in the 2nd inning and the Tigers came back with 2 in the 4th inning. Cheverton singled and was moved on Rochester's single and a walk to Wells. Geren hit a sacrifice fly and Green hit an RBI single also. The Bucks scored another in the 5th and the Tigers scored 1 in the 6th as Burstrom reached on an error and after a fly out, Wells walked and Geren singled to plate one. Green flew out and Michael Gay walked but Henry struck out to end the threat. The Bucks exploded for 3 unearned runs behind 2 crucial errors by the Tigers defense and while the Tigers had opportunities in the 7th inning, once again, no one stepped up and got the big at bat. The Tigers lose 7-3 despite a solid effort by Green who goes 6 innings and allows 2 earned runs for the game.
Game 3 was all about Coty Green as he threw a real gem of a game. He went the full 7 innings and allowed 4 hits and 1 walk while spinning a 6-0 shutout ( the second of the year for him ). The game was scoreless until the 3rd inning as the Tigers had 4 hits and scored 3 runs for the inning. Alex Henry doubled to right and then Rangel singled to center to score him. After a walk to Tanner Shamblin and a double play ground out Burstrom ripped a single as did Rochester and Wells to complete the scoring. Green kept mowing them down and the Tigers finished off the Saluqis with 3 more in the 6th inning. Walks to Henry, Rangel, and Shamblin were followed by a sac fly by Cheverton and singles by Burstrom and Rochester. This made the final score 6-0 and pushed the Tigers record to 34-5 overall and 17-1 in conference. The next game will be the exhibition game at AT&T Park vs. the Chattanooga Lookouts. This game will begin at 7:15 pm.
March 23rd and 24th at Hiwassee College
The #1 ranked Tigers went into Madisonville, TN to take on the always tough Tigers of Hiwassee College. Coach Lance Knight does a super job of getting quality players to play well at Hiwassee and this year's team is another example of that. ChattState sent 7-0 Thomas Gray to the mound to try for his 8th consecutive win and he did but not without some tight times. ChattState scored 1 in the 2nd inning behind a HBP and stolen base by Beau Geren and then a single by Alex Henry. 2 more were plated in the 3rd as Heath Cheverton got a single and Trey Burstrom walked and then Nate Rochester had a big hit. In the 5th the Scenic City Tigers again scored as Cheverton singled and stole second and then was scored on an error by the Hiwassee pitcher. Hiwassee came back and scored one in the 6th and then 1 in the 7th but Gray kept them at bay going the full 9 innings and allowing 5 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 11 on the day.
Game 2 was another tough day at Madisonville and Chattanooga State struggled the entire game with Hiwassee's pitching. Hiwassee scored one in the 2nd inning off of starter Drew Bowlin. The Tigers of Chattanooga came back with 2 of their own in the 3rd inning as Clay Hindman walked and then moved around on Alex Henry's double. A ground out by Tanner Shamblin and a sacrifice fly by Cheverton scored the two runs. Hiwassee came back with 2 of its own in the 4th inning and the ChattState 9 answered again with a solo run in the 6th. Tanner Shamblin again drove in a run with a sacrifice fly ball. Chattanooga State just couldn't get the "big" hit they needed and that came back to haunt them. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Hiwassee scored on a single and a big 2-run home run to right field. ChattState tried to mount a comeback but couldn't get the key hit and Hiwassee won 5-3.
Game 3 was more of the same as Coty Green took the mound for ChattState and delivered a gem of a game. He allowed 6 hits in 7 innings and only 1 earned run while striking out 3 and walking no one. Chattanooga State erupted for 5 runs in the 2nd as Kendal Wells walked, as did Beau Geren and Clay Hindman was hit by a pitch. After a fielder's choice, Tanner Shamblin hit a single and then Cheverton hit a sac. fly. Trey Burstrom walked in another run and then Nate Rochester rocketed a ball to CF to score 2 more. Hiwassee came back with 2 in the 3rd inning and then Chattanooga State scored 1 in the 5th inning and 2 in the 6th inning. Big hits were made by Wells, Michael Gay, Cheverton, Alex Henry and Rochester. The final score was 8-2 in a hard fought win for the Tigers of Chattanooga State. This puts their record at 28-6 overall and 13-2 in conference. Coty Green goes to 4-2 overall and pitched a masterful game.
Game 2 put Bradden Scott on the mound for the Tigers and he delivered 4 innings of 2 hit ball. He upped his record to 4-0 also and allowed only 2 earned runs. The Tigers scored 3 in the 2nd and 2 each in the 3rd and 4th innings. With the scored 7-2 in the 5th the Tigers exploded for 4 runs and then 2 more in the 7th. Drew Carnes had 3 hits as did Trey Curtis. Burstrom chipped in 3 RBI's and Clay Hindman had 2 RBI's on a big home run in the second inning. The final score was 14-5 and made the Tigers 26-5 overall.
March 13 at Georgia Perimeter College
The red-hot ChattState Tigers rolled in to Hot 'lanta to play the Jaguars of Georgia Perimeter. The Tigers sent Bradden Scott to the mound with a 3-0 record and he struggled some early in the outing. He allowed 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning behind 4 hits. After no scoring in the second inning, the Tigers scored 2 in the third inning as Alex Henry and Scott Guest got a singles and were moved around to 3B. Henry scored on Trey Burstrom's fielders choice and Guest scored on a balk. The Jaguars scored a solo run in the 3rd as Scott tried to settle in. The Tigers again scored 2 in the 4th behind a Trey Curtis single and singles by Isaiah Newson and Heath Cheverton. Scott Guest drove one in with a sacrifice fly. With the game tied, Adam Hinojosa came in and got out of a jam in the bottom half of the fourth. The Tigers scored one in the top of the fifth to take the lead. Rochester doubled and moved up on an error to 3B. Coty Green drove him in with a single through the drawn in infield. Hinojosa threw one more outstanding inning and then gave way to Lee Henry who threw two sparkling innings to earn his 3rd save of the year. The final score was 5-4 Tigers and that made 13 in a row.
Game two was a low scoring affair and the usual hot-hitting bats of the Tigers were silenced by some good Jags pitching. The Tigers scored 1 in the first as Burstrom got on base and stole 2nd. He then got to third on a fielder's choice and stole home on the back-end of a double steal. The Jaguars immediately followed suit off of Michael Gay and scored in the bottom of the inning. Gay settled in and gave up only one more run in the 4th inning. Unfortunately, the Tiger bats were silent and no runs were scored to the 7th inning. With 2 outs in the 7th inning and nobody on base, Nate Rochester coaxed a walk as did pinch hitter, Coty Green. Up stepped freshman catcher, Drew Carnes, and after working the count to 3-2, he stroked a line shot down the 3B line to score one run. Cheverton hammered a shot to left field that the Jags outfielder flagged down on the run for a superb play. Gay kept mowing down hitters to force the game to extra innings and in the 8th inning the Tigers mounted a rally. Newson walked and was moved to 2B where he was moved to third on an infield single by Tanner Shamblin. He scored on Guest' infield error for the lead and then Shamblin scored on a squeeze bunt from Burstrom. Gay closed the game out in the bottom half for his third win of the season against no losses and the Tigers won a squeaker 4-2 to go to 23-3 for the season and kept their winning streak in tact at 14 games. Their next games will be Thursday at home vs. Lake Michigan CC at 1 pm.
March 9-10th vs. Columbia State
The Tigers took on the always-tough Chargers from Columbia State. Thomas Gray took the mound for the start of the first game sporting a 5-0 record. The Chargers opened up with 3 runs in the first inning but the Tigers answered back with 5 of their own. After a walk to Scott Guest, Trey Burstrom and Nate Rochester singled and then Kendal Wells blasted a bases clearing double to left field. Alex Henry also hit a double to drive in a run. Two more scored in the second for ChattState as Guest singled and Burstrom again singled and after a fly out Wells delivered a single to drive in one and then a pair of walks and a wild pitch plated the second. The Chargers scored one in the third as Gray struggled some. The Tigers scored 1 more in the fourth behind a single by Rochester and Wells and then a sacrifice fly by Beau Geren. 2 more were scored by the Tigers in the 6th as Burstrom, Wells and Geren again did the damage. Finally, 5 were plated in the 7th to end the game by a 15-5 score. Gray went the whole way and Burstrom was 4 for 4 with 4 runs scored and Wells was 5 for 5 with 3 runs scored and 5 RBI's.
Game 2 put freshman Drew Bowlin on the mound sporting a 4-0 record. The hard-throwing Jefferson County native delivered a rollercoaster ride. He allowed 4 runs in the first inning and 1 in the second but then settled down to throw 4 scoreless innings. He struck out 8 and allowed 8 hits. The Tigers scored 2 in the first and 2 in the second to cut the lead to 5-4. Kendal Wells continued his hot hitting with a double in the first to drive in a run and then Beau Geren drove him in with a single. Alex Henry and Nate Rochester got big hits in the 2nd as Columbia walked 3 hitters also. In the 4th the Tigers tied the game with a run behind a Rochester double and a Wells double. The game went extra innings and Adam Hinojosa and Lee Henry delivered outstanding relief efforts. Henry threw 1 2/3 innings and struck out 4 hitters. The Tigers scored a run in the bottom of the 8th on a very questionable call at the plate. Kendal Wells drove in the run on a bases loaded squib hit. Lee Henry pushed his record to 2-1 with the win.
Game 3 again started off rocky for the Tigers as Coty Green was the unfortunate beneficiary of 2 errors in the first and allowed 2 unearned runs. The Tigers came back in the 3rd and plated 3 to take the lead. Burstrom doubled and Rochester singled and then Geren hit a sacrifice fly and Trey Curtis drove in one with a single. In the fourth the Tigers scored another run as Isaiah Newson singled and stole second and third base. He then scored on a fielder's choice. Two more were plated in the bottom of the sixth after the Chargers had scored 1 unearned in the top half of the inning. Wells walked and scored on Curtis' double. Curtis scored on Henry's double. The final score was 7-3 as Coty Green pushed his record to 3-1 on the young season. This makes the Tigers 21-3 and 11-1 in conference. The next game will be Tuesday as they travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia Perimeter College and then at home on Thursday vs. Lake Michigan Community College at 1 pm.
March 2nd at Roane State
The still red-hot ChattState Tigers rolled into Harriman, Tennessee to take on the Raiders of Roane State. 4-0 Thomas Gray took the mound looking for his 5th win and got it! He gave up an earned run in the first inning and then didn't give anything up until the 8th inning and by then the damage was done by the Tigers' bats. Gray ended up allowing 2 earned runs and 7 hits while striking out 7 and walking 4. The Tigers scored one run in the first 3 innings and then 2 in the 4th. In the 5th inning they erupted for 4 runs and then followed with another solo tally in the 6th and then 9 in the 8th inning. The final score was 20-3 and Scott Guest went 4 for 6 with 3 rbi's, Trey Burstrom went 2 for 5 with 2 rbi's and 3 runs scored, Nate Rochester went 3 for 5 with 2 rbi's and Trey Curtis went 3 for 5 with 3 rbi's, while Alex Henry chipped in a 2 for 4 day with 2 rbi's. This puts the Tigers at 14-3 and 6-1 in conference.
Games 2 and 3 were played in unbelievable wind conditions in Harriman. The wind was blowing out to left field at about a 35 mph rate all day!! Pitching and defense were at a premium and the Tigers delivered both. The first game of the day put freshman, Drew Bowlin, on the mound sporting a 3-0 record. He threw 4.33 innings and struck out 6 while allowing only 1 earned run. Freshman Lee Henry came in and threw the remaining 2.66 innings and got the save. The Tigers opened up scoring in the 2nd inning as they plated 4 runs. After 2 outs, Isaiah Newson hit a double to left and Alex Henry and Heath Cheverton and Scott Guest and Trey Burstrom followed with singles to score the 4. In the 3rd inning Trey Curtis hit a solo HR to left field. The Raiders scored 4 in the 3rd inning to make the game close and the Tigers countered with 1 in the 5th inning as Burstrom walked and came around to score on an error on Trey Curtis. The game stayed at 6-5 until the 7th inning as the Tiger bats came alive and delivered 9 runs!! Burstrom walked and was followed by a mammoth HR to center by Rochester. After a single by Kendal Wells and a walk to Coty Green, Michael Gay, Alex Henry, Cheverton, Guest, Burstrom and Rochester all had hits. The Raiders scored 2 in the 7th but the Tigers held on for a 15-7 victory.
Game 3 saw an outstanding pitching performance by Coty Green. He threw a complete game and allowed 7 hits and 5 runs while striking out 8 and walking 1. The Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first as Guest reached on an error and then Rochester doubled and after Wells was walked, Beau Geren tripled and was plated by Gay's single. The Raiders scored one in the first but then the Tigers scored 2 in the 3rd inning as Wells walked and was moved by Geren's double. Trey Curtis hit his second HR of the day and Gay doubled followed by Henry's single. The Raiders countered with another solo tally in the 4th by the Tigers scored 1 in the 5th and 2 in the 6th to start moving the game away. Heath Cheverton homered in the 5th and then Beau Geren and Trey Curtis hit back-to-back HR's in the 6th inning. The final score of the game was Tigers 12 and Raiders 5. This puts the Tigers at 16-3 overall and 8-1 in conference play. They will host St. Claire CC out of Michigan at home on Tuesday.
Game 2 was played without Head Coach Greg Dennis as he was hospitalized for Kidney Stones. Thomas Gray took the mound sporting a 3-0 record and a 0.00 ERA for the 2007 campaign. He didn't disappoint as he delivered 5 scoreless innings to begin the game and allowed one run in the 6th that was scored by an error at shortstop. The Tigers finally got on the board in the bottom of the 6th as Isaiah Newson led off with a single and then was moved to second via sacrifice bunt. After a ground out and a walk to Trey Burstrom, Nate Rochester continued his hot hitting with a rocket to centerfield for a triple. Kendal Wells immediately followed with a single to center and the Tigers were up 3-1. Gray finished them off in the 7th to garner his 4th win and 3rd complete game.
Game 3 was the rubber game and was a dandy. The Tigers came out hot with 4 runs in the first and 3 more in the second as they staked starter Drew Bowlin to a 7-2 lead. Bowlin struggled the first 3 innings allowing 5 runs before settling down for the remainder of the game. He threw a complete game and struck out 10 while allowing 9 hits. Nate Rochester stayed hot as he had 3 hits and 4 rbi's and Kendal Wells also stayed hot with 2 hits and 2 rbi's. Heath Cheverton did his part with 2 hits and Coty Green and Trey Curtis both had rbi hits during the scoring. The Generals tried to tie it up but the Tigers withstood their rally and held on for a hard-fought 8-7 victory. This was Bowlin's 3rd victory against no defeats and makes the Tigers 5-1 in conference play. They will host Gadsden State on Monday in a make-up game from earlier this spring.
February 19th at Shorter College
The nationally-ranked ChattState Tigers rolled into Rome, Georgia to take on the Shorter College Hawks JV team. Freshman Lee Henry took the mound for the Tigers and delivered 6 innings of solid pitching. He allowed 1 run in the first and then nothing the rest of the way. He struck out 6 and allowed only 4 hits. Tyler Stokes came on and threw a solid 7th inning allowing no hits and no runs. The Tigers got the offense going with the first hitter as Scotty Guest hit a solo HR to open the game. In the 3rd inning the Tigers scored 3 as Trey Burstrom led off with a single to left and then Nate Rochester and Kendal Wells each it singles. After an out, Trey Curtis hit a double to left and scored on Alex Henry's single. The Tigers added 4 more in the 5th as Curtis, Heath Cheverton, Guest and Rochester all got big hits. The final score was 8-1.
Game two started with freshman, Michael Burkett, on the bump for the Tigers. The LFO-product delivered a solid 4-inning performance before leaving with a (non-throwing) shoulder problem. Michael Gay, the Ridgeland HS freshman, came on and threw 3 very solid innings in closing the game out. The Tigers started the game off with a 4-run 1st inning. Scotty Guest led off the game with an infield single and moved up on Burstrom's walk. Rochester plated the first run with a sacrifice fly and then Coty Green had a single and Beau Geren scored a run with a sacrifice fly. Trey Curtis finished the scoring with a 2-run HR to left field. The Tigers scored another run in the 3rd behind a double by Rochester and a single by Geren. The Hawks scored 1 in the 3rd but that was to be their only run of the game. The Tigers scored solo runs in the 4th and 6th innings as Tanner Shamblin and Alex Henry got big hits. The final score was 7-1 running the Tigers record to 8-1 overall and preparing them for Tuesday's games against Reinhardt College.
Game two on Saturday was colder and filled with snow flurries. As the temperatures dipped into the mid to low 20's, the Tigers and Cougars prepared for a long, cold day. Drew Bowlin took the mound for the Tigers and delivered a very nice outing. He went 6 innings and allowed 0 runs and struck out 6 while allowing 3 hits. The game was scoreless through 4 as Donny Bryant was throwing a gem for the Cougars also. The Tigers broke through in the 5th with a solo tally as Coty Green was HBP and moved to 2B on a wild pitch. Trey Curtis moved him to 3B and Alex Henry scored him on a fielder's choice. This was the only run of the game as Bowlin left after 6 innings and Lee Henry came in to close out the game. After getting one out Henry proceeded to walk 3 guys in a row and load the bases. He then coaxed a strikeout and a ground ball to shortstop, which Cheverton made a very nice play on to finish the game.
Game 3 held some of the same drama as the Tigers were looking to get a sweep against the 25th ranked Cougars for the second straight year. Coty Green took the mound and the Chattanooga pitcher threw just as he did for Baylor School for 4 years. He threw a complete game 3 hitter where he struck out 6 guys. The Tigers scored one in the first as Guest again got it started with a triple to right field and scored on Burstrom's fielder's choice. The Tigers didn't score again until the 5th when Burstrom hit a single and moved around on some fielder's choice's and scored on a 2-out single by Green. The Tigers also scored in the 7th as Rochester, Wells and Green all got big hits. The final score was 4-0 and completed a 3-game sweep where the Tigers allowed NO RUNS for the series. To do this against a quality opponent like Cleveland State at their field is unbelievable and the Tigers were extremely proud of the pitching and fielding for the weekend.
February 11th vs. Rio Grande College
The Chattanooga State Tigers opened up their home schedule for the 2007 season with Rio Grande College out of Ohio. Originally scheduled was Olney Central, but due to unforeseen circumstances, they had to cancel. Freshman Thomas Gray took the mound again for the Tigers and twirled a real "gem". He went 7 innings and allowed 0 runs on 2 hits. He struck out 13 hitters and generally controlled the game. The Tigers scored 1 in the 2nd inning when Kendal Wells singled up the middle and then was scored by a single by Coty Green. In the 3rd inning the Tigers broke loose for 4 runs as Isaiah Newson reached on an error and then stole second base. Singles by Trey Burstrom and Nate Rochester got the inning going and then a double by Green and another single by Trey Curtis concluded the scoring. The Tigers finished with a solo tally in the 5th when Curtis walked and was moved to third on Alex Henry's single. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Heath Cheverton. Rochester, Green and Curtis all ended the game with 2 hits and Green and Curtis had 2 RBI a piece.
Game two was more of the same by the Tigers as they jumped out early and often. Freshman Drew Bowlin spun a nice outing as he went 4 2/3 innings and allowed 3 hits and struck out 8. The Jefferson County native looked solid in his second outing and showed command of 2 pitches most of the outing. The Tigers scored 1 in the first, 5 in the second 1 in the third, 5 in the fourth and 2 in the fifth to conclude the game, 14-4. Alex Henry had 3 hits and 3 RBI and Clay Hindman was 4 for 4 in his first collegiate game with 3 RBI. Pat Jones, Heath Cheverton and Coty Green all gyped in 2 hits a piece.
April 22-23rd vs. Walters State
The 4th ranked Senators of Walters State came into town to play the 20th ranked Tigers of ChattState. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the Senators were a little more up for the task than the home team Tigers. Mickey Campeanu took the mound for the Tigers in the first game and flew through the first 2 innings unscathed. Unfortunately in the 3rd inning, the Senators began to figure out Campeanu and scored 2 runs. While this was going on the Senators pitcher was mowing through the usually potent Tiger offense. Other than Nate Rochester's single in the 2nd inning, the Tigers weren't able to muster much in the first 3 innings. The Senators exploded for 4 runs in the 4th and the Tigers tried to answer with a HBP to AJ Renfrow and a single to center by Andy Simunic. This put runners on second and third base with no outs but AJ Morris, Rochester and Chris Glass couldn't find a way to plate even one run. The Senators then scored 1 in the 5th and 3 in the sixth as they broke the game open against relievers Brandon Stewart and Myron Jensen. The Tigers finally scored 2 in the 7th inning but it was far too little too late as Chris Glass and Matt Johns hit singles and Trey Burstrom had an RBI. The final score was 16-2 as the Senators won game 1.
Game 2 was a well pitched game as lefty, Lance McClain took the mound for the Senators sporting a 7-0 record and staff-ace Coleman McKellar took the mound for the Tigers sporting a 7-1 record. Both didn't disappoint. McKellar only weekend in the 4th as he walked the lead-off hitter and then allowed a 3-2 home run to fall behind 2-0. The Tigers finally broke through in the 6th as Renfrow was again HBP and Simunic walked and after a strikeout they moved up on an infield single by Rochester and then a key 2 out hit by Glass. Unfortunately, the Tigers were not able to drive in the go ahead run as Johns hit weakly to third base. The Senators scored 1 run in the 8th inning and the Tigers were not able to answer that run and lost 3-2. McKellar struck out 10 and threw masterfully as he held the Senators to 6 hits overall. Rochester was 2 for 4 and Glass had a single and 2 RBI's.
Game 3 was more reminiscent of game 1 as the Senators fell behind 3-0 in the first inning. Burstrom, Renfrow and Simunic all came out blasting hits, as Renfrow's was a ringing double. Morris walked and Rochester rocketed a sacrifice fly and Glass hit an infield single. All this led to 3 runs but the Senators came in and scored 5 off of Cody Gossett. The then scored 2 in the 3rd and the Tigers came back and scored 1 in the inning as Burstrom and Renfrow again each hit doubles. While the Senators continued to score, the Tigers began to slow down. The Senators scored 1 in the 4th and 5 more in the 5th as the game was blown open. Adam Knight came on and threw well in relief but was hurt by some shoddy fielding by the Tigers. Nick Sholtz and Jason Laird finished the game in relief for the Tigers and fared no better. The Tigers scored 1 in the 6th inning behind a double by Nate Battenfield and then a single by Renfrow and a double by Simunic. Unfortunately, again, they died on base as Morris hit a shot to the second baseman. The final score was 16-5 and the Senators left with a sweep of the series, the first such sweep of Chattanooga State this season. The Tigers are 36-15 overall and 16-11 in conference and will host Piedmont JV Tuesday for a doubleheader at 1 pm.
April 14th and 15th at Dyersburg State
The Tigers rolled out one more time to West Tennessee this time to play the hot-hitting Eagles of Dyersburg State CC. Robert White's Eagles have been one of the hottest teams in the conference to date and lead the conference in batting average. The first game was a wonderfully pitched game and finished with a 2-1 score in favor of the Eagles. Mickey Campeanu came off of a couple rough outings and put together a masterful job against a very potent lineup. Campeanu allowed a solo home run to the lead off hitter after the Tigers had scored one in the top of the first inning. He then settled in and threw 5 scoreless innings until allowing another solo home run in the 7th inning with 2 outs. Unfortunately the Tigers couldn't score any more off of the Eagles and they lost 2-1. In the first inning AJ Renfrow ripped a double to right field and was followed by a walk to Andy Simunic. AJ Morris stroked a single to right field to score Renfrow but Nate Rochester hit into an inning-ending double play to conclude that scoring threat. Chris Glass had 2 hits in his homecoming back to Dyersburg but it wasn't enough.
Game 2 promised to be a pitcher's dual as Joe Morgan ( 9-1 ) took the mound for the Eagles and Coleman McKellar ( 6-1 ) took the mound for the Tigers. The Tigers broke through first on 5 runs in the 3rd inning off of Morgan. After 2 outs the Tigers got rolling with singles by Nate Battenfield, Trey Burstrom, AJ Renfrow and Andy Simunic. A walk to AJ Morris followed and then a booming double to left center field by Nate Rochester plated all 3 runners. The Tigers scored another in the 5th when with 2 outs again Simunic singled and stole second and then scored on Morris' hit. The Eagles finally broke through and scored 2 unearned runs in the 6th and the Tigers answered with another run in the 7th behind singles by Burstrom, Renfrow, Simunic and a sacrifice fly by Rochester. The Eagles rallied for 3 runs but fell short with the final score being 7-5. McKellar moved his record to 7-1 overall and allowed only 3 earned runs and had 7 strikeouts.
Game 3 was another barn-burner as the Eagles jumped out on starter Cody Gossett for 3 runs in the first 2 innings. The Tigers scored 1 run in the top of the 3rd as Chris Glass got on a hit by pitch and then Nate Battenfield hit a single followed by another infield single by Burstrom. Into the game came Adam Knight and the Eagles were held relatively at bay. He threw 4 innings and allowed 3 hits and no runs. The Tigers broke loose and scored 5 in the 5th inning as Matt Johns, Battenfield had singles and Renfrow had a triple and Simunic a double. 4 more runs were scored in the 6th as the Tigers started to break away. After a walk, Glass had another single as did Battenfield and then another triple by Renfrow broke the Eagles back. Nick Sholtz came on to close the game and the Tigers won 10-3 to push their record to 34-12 overall and 16-8 in conference. Their next game is at 1 pm Monday at Bell South Park as they play a doubleheader against the Shorter JV.
Game two started off well for the Tigers as freshman, Nick Sholtz, took the mound and proceeded to pick up where Jensen had left off. He ran into some trouble though and allowed 4 runs in his 6.3 innings pitched but only 2 of them were earned. The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead with 1 in the first inning and 2 in the second. Glass led off with a HBP and then Burstrom walked. After a fly out Morris hit a single to drive in one run. In the second inning Battenfield walked and was sacrificed to second. Josh Frederick ripped a shot to right field to drive him in. After a pair of walks with 2 outs, Morris was hit by pitch to drive in another run. Unfortunately, the Highlanders came back and drove 2 runs in the 7th ( unearned ), and took the lead but the Tigers came back with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th inning and scored 1 run and had the winning run on 2nd with Burstrom at the plate. After Chris Glass had already gotten a clutch 2-out, 2-strike hit to tie the game, Burstrom couldn't deliver the coup-de-grace and win the game. In the 8th inning, the Highlanders again scored 1 run off of reliever Adam Knight. The Tigers couldn't answer this run and went down to defeat, 5-4. The next game is another crucial conference series for the 12th ranked Tigers at Dyersburg State on Friday and Saturday. Then on Monday the Tigers return home to play a non-conference doubleheader against Shorter College JV at BellSouth Park at 1 pm.
Game 2 faired much better for the Tigers as they showed great resiliency in bouncing back from a huge loss and putting together a great effort and result. Cole McKellar took the mound and responded with another great outing. Coming off of a very uncharacteristically bad outing in Memphis, McKellar threw 6 innings and allowed only 3 runs to the hot-hitting Bucks. He struck out 4 and walked only 1 while allowing 6 hits. The Tigers scored 6 in the first inning behind singles by Trey Burstrom and AJ Renfrow and after a walk to AJ Morris and a single by Nate Rochester the big hits came from Matt Johns and Chris Glass. Burstrom closed the inning out with yet another 2-RBI single. The Tigers scored 3 in the second behind a big 2-run HR by Nate Rochester ( his fifth of the season ). Another solo run was tallied in the 3rd inning as Nate Battenfield got on on an infield single and moved to third on AJ Renfrow's hit and scored on Andy Simunic's single. After the Bucks had scored 3 in the top of the 4th, the Tigers responded with 2 in the 5th behind a double by Burstrom, who went 4-5 for the game, and singles by Renfrow ( 3-4 for the game ) and Ian Barsch and then a double by Rochester ( 3-3 for the game ). The final run was tallied in the 6th when Chris Glass hit a single and was advanced on a fielder's choice and then stole 3B and scored on Burstrom's fourth hit of the game. This finished the game early with the Tigers winning 13-3.
Game 3 started out much like the others with the Bucks scoring 2 in the top of the first inning against Cody Gossett, who came in sporting a 6-2 record. The Tigers responded with 2 in the bottom of the first when Burstrom walked and Renfrow continued his hot hitting with a single and then AJ Morris ripped a double off of the right-center field wall. Unfortunately, Morris died at second base and the Tigers' offense was slowed considerably after that. The Bucks scored one in the 3rd inning and the game stayed at 3-2 until the fifth inning when they broke through for 2 2-out runs and then chipped in a solo run in the 6th off of Adam Knight. Knight then allowed 4 more runs in the 7th ( 2 unearned ) as the Bucks turned a close game into a runaway and held on to win 10-2 to complete the 2 out of 3 series win. AJ Renfrow was 2 for 4 in the second game. The Tigers next game is a home doubleheader against Gordon College on Wednesday starting at 2 pm.
March 24th-25th vs. Hiwassee College
Chattanooga State hosted the conference leading Hiwassee Tigers in a crucial Region VII showdown. Hiwassee was coming off of 3 consecutive conference sweeps while the ChattState 9 had won 8 of their last 9 conference tilts. Raymond Ruggles took the mound for the Hiwassee Tigers and didn't disappoint as he blended a good fastball with some biting sliders to make the day tough for the ChattState hitters. Mickey Campeanu was on the bump for the home team Tigers and he delivered even better. Campeanu threw a complete game 3 hitter and allowed only 1 unearned run on the day. Chattanooga State got to Ruggles for 2 unearned runs in the 3rd inning on a walk and a pair of errors. In the 4th inning the home team scored 3 more via hits by Zane Rice ( who was 3-4 for the day ) and Chris Glass, followed by RBI hits by Steve Simmons and AJ Renfrow. ChattState kept the heat on with 2 more in the 5th behind a double by AJ Morris and another error by Hiwassee and a double by Matt Johns. This concluded the scoring by Chattanooga State and Hiwassee scored one unearned run in the 7th and nothing else off of Campeanu. The Tigers won 7-1 to go to 10-3 in conference and 25-6 overall. Tomorrow's doubleheader will begin at 12 pm with Coleman McKellar ( 4-0 ) and Cody Gossett ( 4-2 ) taking the mound for Chattanooga State.
Game 2 put All Conference sophomore, Cole McKellar, on the mound for Chattanooga State and he threw another wonderful game. ChattState fell behind 1-0 in the second inning and came roaring back in the bottom of the 2nd with 10 runs!! Nate Rochester had 2 hits in the inning and AJ Morris, Zane Rice, Steve Simmons, Trey Burstrom and AJ Renfrow all also had hits. Hiwassee scored another run in the 3rd inning but the Tigers answered with 1 in the 4th and 5th inning to close out the game in 5 innings at 12-2. This pushes McKellar's record to 5-0 on the season.
Game 3 was a tough affair with left-hander Cody Gossett taking the mound to try for the sweep. Hiwassee scored 1 in the 2nd and 3 in the fourth as their "never-say-die" attitude was always present. ChattState answered with 1 in the 2nd and 4 in the 4th to take the lead 5-4. They stretched it to 6-4 in the 5th and then exploded for 5 runs in the 6th inning behind good base running and hitting. Gossett threw a complete game and allowed only 7 hits and struck out 7 for the game. AJ Morris continued his torrid hitting with a 4 for 4 game and 2 doubles and 4 RBI's, while Nate Rochester chipped in a 2 for 4 game and 2 RBI's. Gossett goes to 5-2 overall and the Chattanooga State Tigers climbed to 27-6 and 12-3 in conference which vaults them into the lead of the conference.
March 18th at Gadsden State CC
The Chattanooga State Tigers paid a return trip down to Alabama to play the Cardinals of Gadsden State CC. It was a sunny and warm day in Gadsden as the two teams completed the 4 game series and made up for the 3 previous rain-out dates on this game. The Tigers started Cody Gossett on the hill and he threw 4 innings allowing only 2 unearned runs. The Tigers scored 1 in the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th innings as the Cardinals scored 1 in the 3rd, 4th and 2 in the 5th innings. The game stood 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh, when the Cardinals hitter blasted a triple to plate the runner on first base and win the ballgame, 5-4. Andy Simunic and Nate Rochester each had 2 hits and Trey Burstrom had a key double in the seventh inning to tie the game up at 4. Lance Alsup absorbed the loss with 2 1/3 inning relief while allowing 3 earned runs.
Game 2 went much better for the Tigers as they jumped off to a 3-0 lead in the 2nd inning. AJ Morris was hit by pitch and after a walk to Chris glass and an infield out, Nate Battenfield delivered a clutch single to right field. After another out, Burstrom had a hit to right also and following a walk, Andy Simunic walked ( for what would be one of 4 walks on the game for him ) and drove in a run. The Cardinals answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the 2nd off of starter, Adam Knight, but couldn't muster any more. The Tigers came on strong in the third inning and plated 5 runs in all. Key hits were by Burstrom and Alex Henry as hitting and base running was the key for the outburst of runs. The Tigers added 2 more in the 5th inning on a Cardinal error and a walk and then a booming double to left-center by Nate Rochester to drive in both runs. Rochester now leads the team with 31 RBI's total while also second in batting average at .437. The Tigers held on to win the game 10-1 with Nick Sholtz, Myron Jensen and Brandon Stewart giving needed relief. Their next game is Wednesday at Barnesville Georgia vs. Gordon College and then at home in conference on Friday and Saturday vs. Hiwassee College.
March 10th-11th at Columbia State
Friday, March 10th was a beautiful day in Columbia Tennessee weather-wise but not so nice to the visiting Chattanooga State Tigers playing wise. The Tigers got off to a somewhat rocky start and it continued the better part of the entire day. The Chargers of Columbia State scored solo runs in the first, second and third inning off of starter Coleman McKellar. McKellar worked out of jams in each inning and stayed gritty for the entire game. The Tigers scored 3 in the second behind a walk to Nate Rochester, a single by AJ Morris and after a sac fly was hit Chris Glass and Zane Rice hit ringing doubles to plate the last two runs of the inning. The score stayed knotted at 3 until the 7th inning when after a very questionable call at first base went for the Tigers, Glass stepped up and hit a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence for his second HR of the year. McKellar held on in the bottom of the 7th and the Tigers won 5-3.
The second game started off much like the first with the Tigers unable to get any offense going behind Cody Gossett's pitching. The Chargers scored 2 in the bottom of the second inning and the Tigers scored 1 in the top of the 4th behind a 2-out single by Andy Simunic and a stolen base. Then Rochester delivered a ringing single to score Simunic. Unfortunately, the Chargers erupted for 8 runs in the bottom half of that inning with 6 hits and 2 errors. They went on to win the game 11-1.
Game 3 was by far the best of the series for the Tigers. Mickey Campeanu came out and threw a superb game after the first 4 hitters. The Tigers scored in the first inning behind a single by Trey Burstrom and a series of walks to plate one run but leave the bases full. In the bottom of the first the Chargers hit a single and then a HR off of Campeanu followed by 2 walks. He settled down and got a much needed double play and fly out and then the Tigers got going. The scored 5 runs in the 3rd inning behind doubles by Rochester and Rice and home runs by Morris and Nate Battenfield. They scored 2 in the fourth inning with key hits coming from Morris, Glass, Rice in the inning. 3 more were plated in the 5th as the rout was on. AJ Renfrow doubled and was followed by another double by Simunic and a pair of singles by Rochester and Morris and Rice. Finally, the scoring concluded with 5 more in the 7th by the Tigers to finish the game at 16-3. Matt Johns hit a big double in that inning and Battenfield chipped in a single along with Burstrom. Campeanu got the win to go to 4-1 on the young season. The Tigers next play at Shorter College on Tuesday and then at home versus Gadsden State on Thursday.
March 3rd and 4th vs. Roane State
Chattanooga State took on the Raiders of Roane State in a home conference series and jumped out to an early lead immediately. The Tigers started freshman, Mickey Campeanu, in the first game and he threw 6 super innings. The wind was blowing out and it was a tough day to hold the hitting down but Campeanu did just that. He allowed only 3 runs while the Tigers were on their way to 22 total runs!! After scoring 5 in the first, the Tigers scored 3 the next two innings and then a solo run in the 4th and 2 more in the fifth and then exploded for 8 runs in the 6th inning. The game was called due to the mercy rule in the 7th with the final score 22-3. Trey Burstrom went 5 for 6 while Andy Simunic, Nate Rochester, Matt Johns and Nate Battenfield all had 3 hits. Rochester drove in 4 ( 2 on a monster HR to left field ) while Simunic chipped in 3 RBI's and Battenfield and Johns each had 2. Oscar Cuevas hit a Grand Slam HR in his first collegiate at bat in the 6th. The Tigers didn't commit an error defensively and Myron Jensen came on to throw a sparkling 7th inning.
Game 2 started off a little slower for the Tigers but they got it going soon. Coleman McKellar took the mound for the home team and he delivered a shutout performance. He allowed 6 hits and no runs while striking out 3. The Tigers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second inning behind hits by Johns, Steve Simmons and Burstrom. Simmons drove in 2 with a key single up the middle. In the 4th inning the Tigers scored another solo tally on 2 out hits by Burstrom, Renfrow and Simunic. In the 5th they kept the pressure on by scoring 2 more behind a pair of walks and a key hit by Battenfield to left field. Again the defense sparkled with no errors and the Tigers won 9-0.
Game 3 started off much tougher as starter Cody Gossett was roughed up for 2 runs in the first inning by the visiting Raiders. The Tigers immediately responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the first inning and settled in to their usual solid offensive performance. Gossett only allowed 1 more hit the remainder of the game and Adam Knight came in and threw the final inning allowing no hits. The Tigers scored 4 in the second inning behind hits by Zane Rice, Battenfield, Renfrow and Simunic and then a big 2 out triple by Rochester. The scoring slowed down until the bottom of the 6th inning when the Tigers threw 3 more up on the board to gain some insurance. Rochester, Morris and Johns all lined singles to right field and then Alex Henry and Battenfield drove in runs with a hit and a fielder's choice respectively. The Tigers won 9-3 to conclude the sweep and jump to the top of the conference lead with a 7-2 record. The next games will be Tuesday at home vs. Georgia Perimeter College at 1 pm.
February 24-25th at Jackson State
The Tigers traveled to West Tennessee to take on the defending conference regular-season champion Jackson State Generals. The first game started off very roughly for the Tigers as the Generals plated 6 runs in the first off of starter Adam Knight. He allowed 2 more on base in the second and was relieved by Mickey Campeanu. Campeanu pitched well only allowing 3 runs to score in the 2nd inning. With the score 9-0 in the second the Tigers started "chipping" back. Chris Glass got on base on a walk and came around to 3rd on an error and then scored on a balk in the 3rd. Andy Simunic walked to lead off the 4th and then scored on Nate Rochester's single to left field. In the 5th Rochester hit a 3-run home run to left field with 2 outs. With the score 10-5, the Tigers again scored single runs in the 6th and 7th innings. The Generals scored 1 in the 7th to look like they had it won but in the 9th inning with the score 11-7 the Tigers came alive. Rochester, AJ Morris and Nate Battenfield all hit singles to start the inning. Then the Generals' pitching walked 2 and hit one batter. Trey Burstrom hit a double play ground out to plate the tying run and AJ Renfrow drove in the go-ahead run with an infield single to the right side. In the bottom of the ninth the Generals mounted a rally, much as you would expect from a club of their caliber, and relief pitcher, Brandon Stewart, induced the final fly out to deep left with runners on 2nd and 3rd. Final score CSTCC 12 JSCC 11.
Games two and three were played the next day and it wasn't nearly as nice a day weather-wise as the previous one. After having dined at Mr. and Mrs. Dan Morris' house ( AJ Morris' parents ) on some great spaghetti and trimmings the night before, the team arrived ready to play the doubleheader. Sophomore ace Coleman McKellar took the mound and after having a brief wildness spell, delivered another workmanlike outing. He walked 3 in the first and hit one batter before getting the final out. After that one run he only allowed single runs in the 4th and 5th innings as the Tigers bats squandered opportunities. Finally in the 6th inning, with the score 3-0 Generals, the Tigers broke through for 2 runs behind a double by Morris and a bunt single by Glass. A ground out plated one run and then following another ground out, Steve Simmons was walked to put runners on 1st and 3rd base. An attempted double steal plated one run to close out that inning's scoring. In the 7th inning, the Tigers again came alive to the tune of 2 runs to take a 4-3 lead. Renfrow singled and after a fielder's choice and an out, Morris and Glass AGAIN delivered key 2 out hits to plate the tying and go-ahead runs. In the bottom of the 7th, the Generals AGAIN mounted a comeback against Stewart and this time finished it with a 2-out winning run scoring walk to win 5-4.
Game 3 was another well played / pitched game as Cody Gossett took the mound for the Tigers. The usually efficient left-hander struggled some with a VERY SHAKILY called strike zone. He walked 8 total and probably has never done that before or will do it since!! The Generals jumped off to a 2-0 start in the first and then when the Tigers scored 2 in the 3rd to tie it, the Generals responded with 4 more. Josh Frederick and AJ Renfrow had the big hits in the 3rd to tie the game at 2-all. The Tigers chipped in runs in the 4th and 5th inning but left the bases loaded twice. Nate Battenfield drove in one run and Renfrow drove in another but many runners were left on base. The Generals blew the game open in the 6th as some questionable walks mounted up and key hits were made. The final score was JSCC 9 and CSTCC 4. The next games will be Tuesday at Georgia Perimeter College and then at home on Friday and Saturday vs. Roane State.
Celebrating a big 3-game sweep vs. Cleveland State
The regularly scheduled Friday-Saturday series was moved to Thursday-Friday due to weather concerns. Thursday was a sunny and warm day and the ChattState Tigers took advantage of it. The first game ace Coleman McKellar took the mound and performed like he has his two years here---battling!! After allowing 1 run in the first after two outs, Cole settled down to keep the heavy hitting Cougars from Cleveland State relatively at bay. The Tigers jumped back for 5 in the third when AJ Morris hit a lead-off single and Alex Henry got on on an error. AJ Renfrow and Andy Simunic both walked to plate a run and then Nate Rochester delivered a key 2-out single to plate 2 more. Matt Johns scored the last two on an error by the right fielder. McKellar allowed a solo run in the 4th but the Tigers came back and scored another run in the bottom half of that inning. Henry walked and stole 2B and moved to 3B on a passed ball. After Trey Burstrom walked they pulled off a double steal and plated another run. In the 6th, the Tigers scored 2 more insurance runs behind hits by Morris and Steve Simmons. Brandon Stewart came on and pitched effectively for the remainder of the game and the Tigers got their first conference win, 8-3.
Game two was a low scoring pitching dual between the Cougars Brad Robinson and the Tigers Cody Gossett. Robinson threw a wonderful game allowing only 3 hits and 3 runs for 6 innings, but LFO product Gossett allowed 4 hits in 6 innings and no runs. Stewart came on again in the 7th and got the save with a scoreless innings relief. In the 4th inning, Andy Simunic and Nate Rochester got on base on a walk and an error and after moving up to second and third were left there for 2 outs until AJ Morris got the big hit of the game with 2 strikes to left field. In the fifth inning, after Henry got on base on another error and was moved by a bunt and ground out, Simunic delivered a big hit up the middle to plate Henry. Gossett and Stewart made those runs stand up and the Tigers got a sweep with the score 3-0.
Game three was played on Friday under unexpectedly good skies. Last year All Conference pitcher, Adam Knight, took the mound for the Tigers with the chance to sweep the Cougars of the 3 game series. Knight struggled through 3 innings giving up 3 hits and walking 5 while surrendering 2 runs. He was relieved by Canadian Mickey Campeanu who continued his solid pitching, going 4 innings and holding the Cougars to 2 more runs over that period. Lance Alsup threw the 8th inning and was scoreless and Brandon Stewart closed out the game ( as he had the previous 2 ) and held the Cougars to 1 more run as the Tigers won the game 9-5. The Tigers jumped out to 2 runs in the first innings behind a lead off double by Trey Burstrom and after a sacrifice bunt, Andy Simunic and Nate Rochester hit singles. Simunic eventually scored on a fielder's choice by Matt Johns. They scored 3 more runs in the 3rd behind hits by Rochester and AJ Morris, who had a sizzling hot series for the Tigers at the plate. 2 more runs were plated in the 5th when, again, Simunic and Rochester had hits and following a Johns walk and another Morris hit, the runs just poured in. Solo runs in the 6th and 7th inning kept the score going up for the Tigers. AJ Renfrow hit the first home run for the season with a rocket out to right field and Alex Henry got on base with a hit and came around to score on a balk. Nate Rochester ended the day 4-5 and Andy Simunic was 3-5 while AJ Morris ended the series with 2 hits in each game.
Zach Burns hitting vs. OlneyColeman McKellar delivers Nate Battenfield at SS
Friday dawned with good weather for the matchup between the Blue Knights of Olney Central CC ( Illinois ) and the Tigers of Chattanooga State. Olney comes in packing plenty of great talent and a national ranking under head coach Dennis Conley. Game #1 started off with Chattanooga State ace, Coleman McKellar, toeing the mound. He delivered a great effort going 5.33 innings and allowing no hits for the first 5 innings. The Knights roughed him up a bit in the 6th for a couple earned runs but Cole threw wonderfully. Brandon Stewart came in and got the win in relief throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings. He struck out 3 and handled the relief role well. The Tigers jumped off to a 4-0 lead through the first 5 innings. In the first inning the Knights made 2 errors which allowed 2 runs. Trey Burstrom led off with a single to left and then the errors followed. Matt Johns chipped in a sacrifice fly to center. In the third inning, AJ Renfrow ripped a triple to left field and scored on Andy Simunic's fielders choice. In the 5th inning the Tigers padded their lead with a run behind a 2-out single by Simunic and a stolen base by Simunic ( one of his 6 on the day ), followed by a double by Nate Rochester to left. After the Knights took the lead in the 6th 5-4, the Tigers came back and scored a tying run in the 6th on a single by Nate Battenfield and a stolen base followed by a single by Steve Simmons and one by Trey Burstrom. No runs were scored in the 7th inning and in the bottom of the 8th with the game tied, the Tigers scored a run to win the game behind a walk to Alex Henry, singles by Chris Glass and Burstrom and a game-winner by Simunic.
Game #2 started off roughly for the Tigers as the Knights jumped on starter, Mickey Campeanu, for 3 runs ( 1 earned ) in the first inning. Campeanu re-grouped and held them at bay for 3 2/3 innings overall and Cody Gossett came on and continued the scoreless inning streak 3 1/3 innings more. With the score 3-0 for the better part of the game, the Tigers broke through and scored 2 in the 5th when Alex Henry led off with a single to left and promptly stole 2B. Trey Burstrom hit a triple to right field and scored on AJ Renfrow's fielder's choice ground ball. In the 6th, the Tigers had a chance to score when Battenfield led off with a single but was thrown out attempting a steal. Glass promptly singled himself and stole 2B and moved up to 3B on an error on the throw. He was left stranded on 3B though. In the 7th, the Tigers mounted one more rally and after an out, Renfrow was hit by pitch and then stole 2B. Andy Simunic ripped a single to right-field and although it appeared to everyone that Renfrow had beaten the high throw to the plate, he was called out. Rochester promptly walked but AJ Morris grounded out to second to end the threat. The Tigers played extremely well this doubleheader and showed great resilience in competing with a quality team.
The final scrimmage of the fall started on a great Saturday afternoon at Gadsden State CC. CSTCC took on the Cardinals and it was a great way to end the fall. Coleman McKellar threw 6 strong innings of 1 run ball allowing 2 hits and striking out 4. After scoring 2 in the first inning, the Tigers scored 1 in the second and then erupted for 7 in the 5th inning, highlighted by a Grand Slam by Matt Johns. In the 6th inning the Tigers scored a solo run to conclude the scoring at 11-1. Johns was the only Tiger with multiple hits but Chris Glass had 2 RBI's and Nate Rochester chipped in a double. The second game started off slowly as the Cardinals jumped out to a 2-1 lead after 1 inning. Adam Knight struggled early and then settled down to throw 5 solid innings striking out 5. 10/13 Cleveland State
The final game of the fall series vs. Cleveland State was played at CSTCC's home field and it was a good one. The Tigers followed a solo run in the first by the Cougars with a 3 run HR by Nate Rochester in the bottom half of the inning. Mickey Campeanu pitched 5 solid innings allowing 2 runs and Nick Sholtz followed with 3 quality innings allowing 1 run and the Tigers won 5-3. Then Cleveland and Chattanooga squared off for the 4th time this fall. The Tigers jumped off to a early 1-0 lead behind Andy Simunic's single and a double by AJ Renfrow. 9/20 Tennessee Temple
The Tigers took on Tennessee Temple at CSTCC's field and played a very solid scrimmage game. Pitching was broken up over a number of guys and after Trey Curtis threw a solid first inning, Oscar Cuevas threw well but gave up the only run that was allowed by CSTCC. Landon Chester followed Cuevas with 2 very good innings and looked the best he has all fall. The freshman LH allowed no hits and walked 0, striking out 1. Myron Jensen followed with a nearly identical outing but allowed 1 hit in two innings. He was followed by Lafayette freshman Nick Sholtz who threw 2 innings also and allowed only 1 hit while striking out 2. In the 3rd inning CSTCC scored a solo run on a double by Zach Burns down the left field line and then a single up the middle by Trey Burstrom. In the 7th inning the Tigers scored another run on a hit by Hookman and a RBI fielder's choice by Steve Simmons. Hiwassee scored 3 in the seventh inning but it wasn't enough as the score ended 10-3.
The second game was against nationally ranked Young Harris CC. The Tigers sent their ace Coleman McKellar to the mound and he didn't disappoint. He threw 4 innings and allowed 1 hit and no runs while striking out 2. He baffled the Young Harris hitters with his wide array of pitches from down under. The Tigers had opportunities to score in the first and 3rd innings but Young Harris' pitcher was up to the task and threw well when he needed to. Adam Knight came in for the Tigers and threw 1 2/3 innings of solid relief allowing only 1 hit and striking out 4. Nic Robinson came in and threw 1 1/3 innings relief and finished out the game allowing no runs. 9/17 Gadsden State CC
ChattState played two pretty good scrimmage games against the Cardinals of Gadsden State. The first game was well pitched by Ben Irwin ( 3 innings, 3 hits and 1 run ), Cody Gossett ( 3 innings, 2 hits, 1 unearned run ), and Nick Sholtz ( 1 inning and no runs ). Unfortunately the Cardinals won the 7 inning affair on an errant throw to 3B by the right fielder in the 6th inning. The second game started off roughly as Nick Sholtz was roughed up for 5 runs on a solo run in the first and a grand slam in the second inning. The Tigers came back with 5 of their own in the second inning on hits by Josh Frederick, Ian Barsch and Alex Hall and then a monster HR to center field by Chris Glass. The Cardinals scored another run on Landon Chester who threw 2 solid innings but the Tigers came back again with a run in the third on a two out triple by Andy Simunic. The Cardinals didn't score any more and the Tigers scored one run in the sixth on a single by Simunic and then a single by Barsch to plate the winning run. Brandon Stewart and Trey Curtis came on to throw 3 effective innings of relief allowing only 2 hits and no runs. This proved to be a solid effort by all the team.
9/13 at Cleveland State
The Tigers rolled into Cleveland State and looked to open their 2005 Fall Season scrimmaging against a solid conference opponent. Adam Knight took the mound and after getting through the first inning well, struggled in second inning allowing 4 runs on 3 hits and 2 errors. Mickey Campeanu got his first taste of JUCO ball going the next 2 innings and getting roughed up to the tune of 6 runs on 8 hits. Mickey consistently struggled with command and location and spelled problems for the Tigers. After spotting the Cougars 10 runs the Tigers came back and scored 5 runs with big hits by AJ Morris, Trey Burstrom, Zane Rice and Nate Battenfield. Nathan Long came in and threw a solid first inning and then allowed 3 runs also. All in all the Tigers struggled in all 3 phases of the game in their inaugural scrimmage of the fall.
The second game went better as Coleman McKellar took the mound and threw 3 great innings allowing 1 hit and no runs. Chattanooga State jumped out with 2 runs in the first behind a big hit by Burstrom and a pair of walks. Jordan Ryan hit a 3 run Home Run in the 4th to boost the lead. Myron Jensen came in and threw 1 2/3 innings of very solid relief and then Nick Sholtz came in and closed it out with a ground ball to shortstop to save the game. The Tigers played more solid defense and pitched much better in this game and hope to build on this effort.
