Student Success: Christy Hixon Frederick - Presidential Excellence Award

Christy Hixson Frederick is an active member and current president of the Chattanooga State chapter of the Student Tennessee Education Association (STEA). Christy organized a variety of community service projects for the STEA including collecting books for a Grundy County elementary school without a library; leading a campaign to collect food for the Chattanooga Area Food Bank; and developing a project with Tyner Middle Academy to access students’ reading levels after TCAP.

She will attend the National Education Association (NEA) convention as the only community college delegate from Tennessee. In addition, Christy will represent Chattanooga State for the third time as a delegate to the Tennessee Education Association (TEA) statewide conference this spring. After graduating from high school in 200l, Christy went to art school for a year. She worked various jobs until 2011 when she began her studies at Chattanooga State. In addition to taking classes, she works as the director of the DuPont Elementary School’s Before and After School Childcare Program. Even with all of these activities, she graduated with a 3.759 GPA and plans to continue her studies at UTC. Still a newlywed, Christy has been married to her husband John Hixson since March 2012.
