Tennessee Reconnect students at Chattanooga State Community College have found that going back to college is not as intimidating as they envisioned. Adults who have been out of school for a few years as well as those who may have been out decades, agree that Tennessee Reconnect is helping to make their dreams come.

More than two decades ago, Sharita Besley graduated high school and registered for college. When her life unexpectedly changed compelling her to withdraw, Sharita’s self-esteem took a hit, and she allowed the negative words swirling within her mind to deter her from pursuing college. Four years later, Sharita decided to give college another try only to be defeated again. “I thought I was ready for the adventures of school, but found out my focus was not there,” said Sharita, disheartened.

Like other students who experience shattered dreams, it was not until 2019, more than 20 years later, that Sharita gave serious thought to college again. With her working hours reduced due to the pandemic, Sharita had more time to focus on her mental and physical health. “This was a time for more self-care and family-care,” remembered Sharita. “It was in those moments I finally realized it was time for me to get back to what I wanted to do to better my life.”

Aware of the Tennessee Reconnect Grant, but never thinking it could be for her, Sharita braced herself and; enrolled at Chattanooga State. Sharita found she qualified for Tennessee Reconnect; giving her new hope. Her mental and emotional resolve was tested during her first semester when she lost her brother suddenly and found her dream of completing a college education at stake once more. “I wanted to give up on school and everything else I was involved in at the time,” recalled Sharita.

During that pivotal moment, Sharita’s family and her ChattState support system sprung into action to help her regain her focus. “I became more motivated and I wanted to prove that I could achieve my long-time goal,” said Sharita. “It is my belief that if it were not for me being in the Tennessee Reconnect program and receiving the additional help I needed, I would not have made it.”

Tennessee Reconnect allows students like Sharita to work full-time while attending college on a part-time basis. “Balancing work and school are challenging for most adult students,” said Marsha Barker, Adult Services director. “Sharita’s determination and perseverance say volumes about her 3.8 GPA as she works to complete her associate degree in Entrepreneurship.”

Tennessee Reconnect is a free education for adults 23 and older. To find out more information or to see if you qualify, call (423) 697-4753 or email marsha.barker@chattanoogastate.edu.
