Student Radiologic Technology Society funds Scholarship
August 26, 2011 | | Press Release
Members of the Chattanooga State Student Radiologic Technology Society presented a gift of $1,000 to Dr. Jim Catanzaro for the club’s Henry Blount Scholarship Fund. Barbara Patridge, club sponsor and Chattanooga State assistant professor of radiologic technology, made the presentation along with Amanda Grisar, president of the Student Radiologic Technology Society.
Kay Thurman, former radiologic technology director for 31 years, originally established scholarship funds for students. Her initial goal was to establish a scholarship for every radiologic technology student in the program. Over the years, Thurman acquired funding from anywhere and everywhere possible. In addition, Chattanooga State radiologic technology medical director Dr. Deloris Rissling, established three scholarships. As a result of their combined efforts there are currently five scholarships designated solely for radiologic technology students.
“This group of students have been more mature and concerned about others than typical college students, and (they) voted to donate any excess funds in the treasury at the end of the year, “ says Sanders who was a founding member of the of the Student Radiologic Technology Society when she attended Chattanooga State.
The Student Radiologic Technology Society was very conservative in their expenditures during the previous academic year, which is why $1,000 was available to donate to the scholarship. The group raised funds mostly through their annual sale of a self-designed t-shirt. Radiologic technologists in the community love the t-shirts and support the student society through their purchases.
Historically, the club has helped families at Thanksgiving and Christmas even though they are extremely busy with their studies and clinic as a result of the rigorous demands of the radiologic technology program. In addition, if they can afford it, students in the organization donate money to offset the costs of certain functions that would otherwise be paid for out of the club’s treasury.
According to President Grisar, “The biggest reason we made the contribution was to support future students. Everyone is not eligible for financial aid. We wanted to keep this opportunity open for everyone.”
