On Monday, November 23, Chattanooga State Community College will host two presentations by Dr. Rand Carpenter, an epidemiologist and the assistant public health veterinarian at the Tennessee Department of Health.  Dr. Carpenter’s first program, which begins at 12 noon in Room 126 of the Albright Omniplex Building, is entitled “Health and Medicine.”  Dr. Carpenter will lead an evening discussion, “Connections-Environmental, Animal, and Human Health,” at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Chattanooga State’s new Health Science Center.  Both presentations are open to the public free of charge.

Dr. Carpenter’s visit coincides with Chattanooga State’s celebration of and participation in the national initiative known as the Year of Science 2009.  Throughout 2009, Chattanooga State’s science department has coordinated a variety of monthly programs and activities, designed to engage students’ interest in expanding their scientific knowledge.  Developed to be academically meaningful yet casual and entertaining, these programs exposed students to the extensive roster of specialties and subjects found in science education.  Program highlights for 2009 included a science-themed documentary film series, open discussions about topics such as evolution and global warming, special workshops, and science demonstrations.
