Chattanooga, TN --- Classes begin at Chattanooga State Community College for the spring semester on January 17. Take your love of CSI to the next level. The Math & Science Division offers Forensic Science II – Crime Scene Investigation (FSCI 1120) for students interested in pursing a career in forensic science. This course provides an overview of the foundations and techniques for proper crime scene investigation with or without a victim’s body; the logical approach for evidence collection, the collection process, and how to document the crime scene is covered.

The Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences offers a number of classes that fulfill both graduation and transfer requirements. Cultural Anthropology (SOCI 216) is the critical study of human diversity. The course explores non-Western and Western cultural expression of religion, language, punishment, economics, politics, gender, family marriage, kinship systems, race and ethnicity and more. Two class times are available, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 - 9:50 a.m., and Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30 – 1:45 p.m.

The Sociology of Food (SOCI 235) is a flex class that begins January 25 and continues to meet on Fridays from 11 – 12:30 p.m. in OMNI 132. Students must attend one classroom session per week, read one or two articles per week, do four hours of community service per week, and keep a journal. Classroom topics include food cultures and practices, social inequalities regarding access to food, and policies aimed at addressing problems in food systems.

Introduction to Women’s Studies (WMST 2010) examines the role of gender in social institutions including family, workplace, education, religion, media, and politics from an interdisciplinary approach. Theoretical perspectives and research from sociology, psychology, biology, and anthropology are used to understand how gender shapes lives on individual, cultural, and societal levels. ENGLISH 1010 is a prerequisite to this course.

To fulfill that New Year’s resolution to lose weight and earn credit hours too, check out Med Ball Circuit (PHED1990-Special Topics). Dynamax Medicine Balls are large, soft, padded weighted balls that participants throw in a variety of ways so that it works all the major muscle groups.

The Division of Business and Information Technologies offers three classes on the cutting edge of essential business technology skills. A Content Management System (CMS) is software that simplifies the process of organizing and managing web content. Content Management Systems (CISP 230) focuses on installing and using WordPress, the most popular content management system (CMS) used for building websites, to create organize and customize web sites. Principles of Web Site Design (CISP 150), or a  strong working knowledge of XHTML or HTML 5 and CSS are prerequisites for the class. The class meets on Tuesdays from 5:30 – 8:15 p.m. Mobile App Development (CISP 260) emphasizes developing content and creating applications for mobile devices, including internet/business practices and techniques for delivery on mobile platforms. Upon completion, students should be able to develop a basic mobile game app. Students will have access to both Android and iPad devices for app development. Prerequisites include Computer Science I (CISP 1010) or demonstrable knowledge of Java programming. The class meets Wednesdays from 5:30 – 8:15 p.m.

Techniques for working with images for Web design are the focus of Web Graphics (CISP 155). Students will also learn how to prepare images for the Web by cropping images, creating thumbnail images, optimizing images, creating slices and image maps, and creating animated GIFs, creating different types of page backgrounds, buttons, headers/logos. Prerequisites include Digital Imaging Foundations (AA 150), or a demonstrable knowledge of Photoshop CS5 or CS6. Class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:30 – 1:45 p.m.

The deadline to apply for various Nursing and Allied Health programs is rapidly approaching. The deadline to apply to the dental hygiene program for the fall is February 4, 2013. March 4 is the deadline to apply to the physical therapy assistant program. Applicants interested in the RN program must turn in all materials by March 15. For LPNs and Paramedics applying to the RN transition program, the final date to submit an application is January 15. Tennessee Technology Center classes also begin on January 17. The TTC offers training leading to employment in only one year. Welding, industrial electricity, and industrial maintenance are programs leading to high demand high paying jobs that are still accepting students.
