Golf Green opens at Chattanooga State
July 6, 2011 | | Press Release
Chattanooga State Community College’s Landscape and Turf Management program will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at its new golf green, July 13 at 10:30 a.m. Local golf course superintendents and golf pros will be in attendance along with members of Chattanooga State’s executive staff. A putting tournament with prizes for the winners follows the ribbon cutting ceremony.
The putting green is the newest addition to the growing Landscape and Turf Management program, which is part of the Tennessee Technology Center (TTC) at Chattanooga State. The putting green and turf demonstration area are part of an outdoor teaching laboratory.
According to Jim Barrott, vice president for Technology and TTC director, “This outdoor lab will be an invaluable resource for teaching students detailed turf management practices necessary in maintaining high-quality turfs such as golf courses and sports fields.”
A sand bunker, landscape beds and turf demonstration areas surround the green. The turf demonstration areas include Bermuda, Tall Fescue, a Creeping/Red Fescue blend and Fescue/Bluegrass blend. The area also includes a Zoysia chipping area. In addition, several new landscape beds constructed around the putting green serve as teaching areas for the care and maintenance of ornamental plants.
The acquisition of a Toro 1000 walk-behind greens mower, a Toro 3100 triplex reel mower, and a Scag zero-turn mower will help to maintain the area as well as teach students the proper operation of golf course and grounds maintenance equipment.
