Focused on Student Success
July 30, 2015 | | Press Release
Chattanooga, TN --- As Chattanooga State Community College celebrates its 50th Anniversary, the focus of the college continues to be about its students. The College offers a wide range of services to help students succeed; staffed by knowledgeable and caring individuals whose main goal is student success. More than 49 percent of students that attend Chattanooga State are over age 25, but the College also has many younger students enrolled in programs like Collegiate High, Early College, SAILS, STEM School and Tech Track. This fall, the first TN Promise high school graduates will begin their college career and have full access to services that the College offers as well.
The Bookstore is often a student’s first stop. Besides books (text, rental and ebooks) for classes, it offers supplies, snacks, ChattState apparel, electronics and more.
The recently remodeled Augusta R. Kolwyck Library and Information Commons (KLIC) provides 117 computers, pay-for-print printers, access to print and electronic materials as well as research consultations services. A relaxed area for study and quiet conversation gives the library a laid-back, cozy feel.
Students will find that ChattState offers computer labs and full access to the Internet at the main campus as well as at East, Kimball, Dayton and Sequatchie/Bledsoe sites.
Have children? The nationally accredited Child Development Center accepts enrollment applications for children ages six-weeks to pre-K offering a safe nurturing environment where children can flourish. Students, faculty and staff enjoy the opportunity to connect with their children in a convenient location to their work and study. Fees apply.
Life happens and when it does, members of the Career Services and Counseling Center are there to provide group and individual career counseling, personal counseling, job placement services, career readiness workshops, as well as referrals to outside sources.
Once students begin classes they may find that they are struggling to understand or keep up with assignments. There is free help available and it may often mean the difference between success and failure. The Andrews Reading & Writing Center provides tutors and labs to help students become more effective and confident readers and writers. Math is often a major stumbling block to students entering college, but Math Emporium personnel also answer questions and coach students through difficult assignments.
A number of adult services assist those students who wish to start or return to college: Adult Education/HSE (High School Equivalency) classes, for qualifying adults, 17 or older, have rotating start times throughout the year and hold classes at the East Campus and the St. Andrew’s Center downtown. Students who did not complete high school can begin anew. And, an Adult Services Center is designed to meet the needs and concerns of non-traditional learners, specifically targeting those age 40 and up.
Veterans Services personnel address the needs of veterans, reservists or active-duty personnel, assist with the filing of forms to access educational benefits and answer questions specifically pertinent to members of the armed forces.
2015 is the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. At Chattanooga State, the Disabilities Support Services (DSS) office works with students to ensure inclusion in services, programs, or activities of a public entity. Students must identify themselves to DSS as having a disability, complete a student data form and provide appropriate documentation to support the claim of disability. DSS staff will meet individually with the student who self-identifies and discuss the need for accommodations in the classroom or for college-sponsored activities.
Life is fun and the Student Life Department facilitates programs, events and opportunities to maximize student learning and development in a fun and enjoyable manner.
