Dr. Ainissa Ramirez

Distinguished scientist and long-time Yale University professor, Dr. Ainissa Ramirez, will speak at Chattanooga State Community College on Friday, March 8, 2013. Her visit, which coincides with the college’s celebration of Women’s History Month, brings attention to the extraordinary achievements of women working in STEM-related industries. Ramirez’s presentation begins at 10 a.m. in the Humanities Theatre and will be an interactive discussion about the importance of promoting STEM education.  The event is open to the public, and admission is free.  Chattanooga State is located at 4501 Amnicola Highway.  

Dr. Ainissa Ramirez Ramirez is an associate professor of mechanical engineering and materials science at Yale University and a visiting lecturer at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).  Prior to joining the faculty at Yale, she was a member of the technical staff at Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies in Murray Hill, New Jersey.  While working at Bell Labs, she developed a process for universal soldering, an innovation that has had a dramatic impact on industrial manufacturing worldwide.  Ramirez’s discovery led to MIT recognizing her achievement with the Technology Review TR100 Award in 2003. She later founded Adhera Technologies, a company based on this invention.

Ramirez completed her undergraduate studies in mechanical engineering and materials science at Brown University.  She continued her work in both concentrations at Stanford University, where she earned both masters and doctorate degrees. Her career also includes creating and hosting the award-winning lecture series Science Saturdays; working as a scientific consultant for PBS’s NOVA programs; and consulting with Time magazine, National Geographic, and the American Film Institute.  A 2012 presenter at the TED conference, Ramirez is author of a TED publication entitled, Save Our Science: How to Inspire a New Generation of Scientists.
