The National Two Year College Association (TYCA) is pleased to announce the winners for the 2014 Diana Hacker TYCA Outstanding Program in English Awards. The awards, cosponsored by Bedford/St. Martin’s, were presented at the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) Convention in Indianapolis on March 22, 2014.

Chattanooga State Community College’s “Writers@Work” received an award in the category of Enhancing Literature and Cultural Arts. This common book program examines ways in which students’ literary analysis and argumentative writing in the composition classroom intersect with regional identity and the college’s role in community scholarship through engagement with an invited author with significant ties to the American south. The author visits campus for one week each spring to engage with students and the community on matters of authorship, empowerment of academic voice, and Southern identity and sense of place. The program is sponsored by the Chattanooga State Foundation and is chaired by Dr. Joel Henderson.

This award honors the achievements of those two-year college English teachers who, together with administrators, community leaders, and/or colleagues in other disciplines or programs, create exemplary programs and initiatives to enhance language learning of students and enable students of diverse interests and backgrounds to achieve their college, career, and personal goals.

For more than thirty years, Diana Hacker was a member of the English faculty at Prince George’s Community College in Maryland. After her death, her publisher, Bedford/St. Martin’s, became intrigued with the program and wished to cosponsor the award honoring two-year college faculty. In her memory, the name was changed to the Diana Hacker TYCA Outstanding Programs in English Awards in 2005.
