\Chattanooga State Community College’s 2012 RN class embarked on an ambitious journey to help the less fortunate members of the Chattanooga community. During the fall semester, the nursing students visited several community agencies while completing the psychiatric rotation portion of their training.

The students experienced firsthand challenges the homeless face on a daily basis at the Community Kitchen and Community Day Care Center. The nursing students rapidly put a massive community service project into action to aid this sometimes forgotten segment of the population.

According to associate professor of nursing, Hennie Gunter, “The class gave generously and unselfishly toward this project.”

Many hours were spent accumulating donations in the form of canned goods, for the Community Kitchen. While blankets, coats, gloves, toboggans, socks and other clothing items were gathered for the Community Day Center. The foot care clinic located at the facility also received much needed supplies.

At the conclusion of their community service project, the nursing students had collected enough items to fill two trucks and two SUVs.
