Chattanooga State Community College Reports Record Fall Enrollment Increase

October 12, 2010 | | Press Release

Chattanooga State Community College posted a 10.3% increase in headcount and an 11.9% increase in full-time equivalent (FTE) credit enrollment for the 2010 fall semester.  The largest enrollment in college history, 12,601, represents an unduplicated headcount of registered students; however, this total does not include the thousands of individuals who are currently engaged in corporate training programs offered through the college.

The 11.9% growth in FTE was the highest increase recorded of any college or university in Tennessee.  Added to the 12,601 headcount total are more than 2,200 students who are enrolled in specialized technical programs offered through the college’s Tennessee Technology Center.  The headcount total also includes more than 3,000 students who are enrolled either in online classes and or in classes taught at one of the college’s satellite sites.  Chattanooga State also noted that the college welcomed its most diverse freshman class this fall.  The composition of the freshmen class is 60% female, 16% African American, and 3% Hispanic.

Dr. James Catanzaro, president of Chattanooga State, referenced the national and local attention on community colleges as the key to career opportunities as a primary factor in the college’s increased enrollment.  “When faced with a struggling economy and high unemployment, young people are more likely to select majors they are confident will lead to well-paying, secure careers, while non-traditional students are more willing to invest in new, promising career paths,” said Dr. Catanzaro.

According to Dr. Elaine Swafford, vice president for Student Affairs, a personalized recruitment strategy also attributed to enrollment growth.  “Recruiting students is a dynamic process,” said Dr. Swafford.  “Our fall enrollment numbers are evidence that our recruiting initiatives were effective and that the community values Chattanooga State as a resource for viable career-building opportunities.”
