ANS Charters New Chapter at Chattanooga State

October 4, 2012 | | Press Release

Chattanooga, TN --- Engineering Technology students at Chattanooga State Community College were granted a charter to establish an independent student chapter of the American Nuclear Society (ANS).  Don Hoffman, ANS president elect was on hand to present the charter.  Chattanooga State is the second community college in the nation to have a student chapter chartered by ANS, and the third school in Tennessee. UTK and Vanderbilt both have student chapters of ANS.

According to Lisa Miller, faculty advisor, ANS student membership helps to develop critical skills, “In our division, it is important for us to encourage professionalism as a part of work ethics.  The students get experience in leadership, event organization, financial planning, and communications through ANS. “

Individuals from diverse fields of nuclear science and technology who felt the need to unify the professional activities within the industry founded ANS. The purpose of the organization is to promote awareness and understanding of the application of nuclear science and technology. Student membership provides opportunities to network, obtain scholarships, receive mentorship, attend ANS student conferences, and access to the career center.

Don Hoffman is the president and CEO of EXCEL Services in Rockville, MD, which provides consulting and project management services to help nuclear power providers and regulatory agencies solve complex operational, engineering, safety and regulatory issues. Hoffman will take over as ANS president next June.
