The path to a successful career often starts with a single opportunity. For many graduates, that opportunity began at Chattanooga State Community College. Their journeys were celebrated during a recent alumni banquet recognizing distinguished alumni and honoring 50 years of Lady Tigers basketball at a recent game.
The 2026 Annual ChattState Alumni Homecoming Banquet honored outstanding graduates whose careers and service reflect the College’s mission of transforming lives through education.
“The Outstanding Alumni Award celebrates achievement, leadership, service, and the lasting impact our alumni make in their professions and in their communities,” said Carla Fulgham, alumni board president-elect.
Three alumni were recognized with Outstanding Alumni Awards during the evening.
Lew Myers, a leader in the nuclear power industry, built a distinguished career serving in senior leadership roles across the country, including as Chief Nuclear Officer at FirstEnergy. Last year, Myers and his wife, Linda, made the largest individual or family gift in Chattanooga State Foundation history, establishing scholarships for engineering students pursuing careers in the nuclear field.
In a recorded message shared during the ceremony, Myers reflected on the impact the College had on his life.
“Without Chattanooga State, none of this would have been possible,” he said. “This school truly provides opportunities for success at any level of your life.”
Tim Chastain, a graduate of Chattanooga State’s collision repair program, was also recognized for his contributions to the automotive industry and his dedication to teaching the next generation of technicians. After years working in the field and the insurance industry, Chastain returned to the College as an instructor.
To date, he has helped secure more than $200,000 in industry donations, including vehicles from Audi and Volkswagen, strengthening hands-on learning opportunities for students.
“Nothing makes me more excited than graduation day,” Chastain said. “Seeing our students succeed and knowing they’re ready for their careers—that’s what it’s all about.”
The College also honored Dr. Maricela Rodriguez, a 1989 dental hygiene graduate whose journey from learning English as a second language to becoming a respected dentist and community leader embodies the power of education.
Rodriguez later earned her dental degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and returned to Chattanooga to open her own practice. She also became the first woman to serve as Chair and President of the Chattanooga State Foundation Board and established the Nora and Jamie Rodriguez Endowed Scholarship, which she created in honor of her parents.
“That single opportunity changed the course of my life,” Rodriguez said of her time at Chattanooga State. “This honor belongs to this institution as much as it belongs to me.”
The evening also welcomed two members into the Half Century Alumni Club, recognizing alumni whose connection to the College spans more than 50 years.
Celebrating 50 Years of Lady Tigers Basketball
Alongside alumni achievements, the College’s annual homecoming celebration also recognized the 50th anniversary of Chattanooga State’s women’s basketball program during a Lady Tigers basketball game.
Former players shared memories of the early days of the team—then known as the Tigerettes. Players say the experience built lifelong friendships.
“We forged those friendships and are still friends today because we played ball together,” said former player Corliss Cooper.
Chattanooga State President Dr. Rebecca Ashford closed the recognition by thanking the athletes, coaches, and supporters who have shaped the program over the past five decades.
From the court to the classroom, the stories shared throughout the evening reflected the lasting impact of a Chattanooga State education. For 60 years, the College has helped guide students into meaningful careers and impactful leadership, creating a legacy that continues with every new class of Tigers.
