Dear Chattanooga State Community,

You may have seen the signs in the hallway, but I wanted to take a moment to remind you; if you would like to add a class during the second 7-week session that begins October 9, please be sure to schedule an appointment with your advisor.

Why would you consider adding a class? I’m glad you asked!

The 7-week format was adopted by our college because, based on data, students are more likely to complete the 7-week classes because it takes a lot of pressure off students. The 7-week format has been proven to help you stay focused, stay motivated, and stay on track. Let’s walk through what this looks like.

Stay Focused

A typical semester is made up of 4–5 classes. If you are able to take 2 classes in the first 7-weeks and 2 in the second 7-weeks, you only have to focus on 2-3 classes at a time instead of 4–5 (the third class may be because you have one 15-week class).

Stay Motivated

There’s some evidence that mid-semester in a 15-week program is when students lose the motivation to continue their studies. It can be difficult to stay motivated when you have family responsibilities, a job, and friends all fighting for your time, classes can seem like a drag. By the time those feelings over being overwhelmed start clouding your view, in a 7-week class, the class is finished, and you can move on to a new subject with renewed interest.

Stay on Track

By staying focused and motivated, you are more likely to complete your degree in 2–3 years.

So, what does this have to do with adding a course for the second 7-weeks? Perhaps you decided to take one class to be sure you could handle the transition to college life. If things look good, you could consider adding a class to the second 7-week session. Why should you speak to your advisor? We want to help you navigate what that looks like for your plan and how that might affect your financial aid.

Your success is our goal.
