April 8, 2021

Dear Chattanooga State Family,

The spring is an excellent reminder that the rain will eventually clear, and the flowers will take its place. It’s such a good analogy for where we are in the semester. We’re near the end of the term, we are a few weeks away from the end of the semester—all of your hard work is about to pay off. It’s also a good analogy for where we are in the pandemic, we know it’s been difficult, but the sun is breaking through the clouds. As more and more people are vaccinated and cases are in decline, we’re looking forward to returning to a safe campus in the near future.

Student Spotlight: Kansas Bradley, nominated for President’s Award

Kansas has defied all odds throughout her journey in the Chattanooga State nursing program. Kansas is a hardworking student, mother and church member who is active in all regards. She and her family suffered significant damage to their home in the Spring of 2020, when the tornado hit Chattanooga at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. In spite of this seemingly overwhelming obstacle, Kansas was able to regroup with family and continued to excel within the nursing program. Kansas recently won a gold medal at the Skills USA Medical Math competition, representing the ADN program at Chattanooga State. Kansas has a wonderful attitude and positive demeanor not just at school, but in the clinical setting as well. She strives to learn as much as she can, to make herself a better nurse, and overall better individual. Kansas is a true representative of a successful community college student and soon-to-be graduate. We are proud to have Mrs. Bradley represent our nursing program.

Looking Ahead—Fall 2021

Schedule an advising appointment

Registration for summer and fall is now open for all returning students; you will need a PIN to register. Schedule an appointment with your advisor to be sure you know which classes to take next semester.

7-Week Classes Update

The 7-week class format breaks the standard 15-week semester into two sessions that are 7-weeks each. You will still take the same number of classes as you would in a 15-week semester, but now you divide the number between the two 7-week sessions. For instance, if you normally take 5 classes in a 15-week semester, the first 7 weeks you might take 3 classes and in the second 7 weeks you might take 2 classes.

The data is in. Over the past several semesters that we have offered 7-week classes at ChattState, students are more likely to finish the class. It doesn’t matter how you break the data down: gender, race, income, or age. Here at ChattState we have seen an increase of 10–15% of students are more likely to finish classes during the 7-week session than they are in a 15-week session. This better completion rate can be attributed to being able to stay focused because of fewer classes, stay motivated because of a shorter term, and stay on track because of fewer classes to plan around.
