Dear Chattanooga State Community,
Last week, I shared the importance of having a clear vision for your life. In addition to having a clear picture in your mind of what you want to achieve, it is also important to understand why you are pursuing that vision. It is important to understand your purpose.
On Thursday, March 28, the Tennessee Board of Regents hosted the sixth annual Statewide Outstanding Achievement Recognition (SOAR) ceremony and celebration in Nashville. I am happy to share that Chattanooga State TCAT student Amanda Sovago-Royal was named TCAT Student of the Year.
Amanda started her college career at UTC but left the university before graduating. After her father died suddenly of a heart attack in 2019, she was inspired to pursue a profession in which she can help others manage stress. Last year, she enrolled in the TCAT’s Massage Therapy program. Having witnessed the devastating effects stress can have on health, she developed a clear purpose: “to become one of the south’s best relaxation massage specialists.”
Amanda’s purpose is her motivation to succeed in college. It is her motivation to be a high-achieving student, while also being a mother and entrepreneur.
If you don’t know why you’re in college, I encourage you to spend some time reflecting on your reason for being here. What is your purpose for going to college and earning a degree or certificate? Knowing your why will keep you motivated when you are overwhelmed, discouraged, or distracted.

Register Now for Summer and Fall
March is advising month, be sure to schedule an appointment with your advisor so you can register for summer and fall classes.
Summer Classes begin May 6, May 28, and July 2.
- This year, if you are a TN Promise student, TN Promise will cover Summer Classes even if you're only taking one class!
Fall Classes begin August 19.
- For Fall 2024 classes, current students who register by April 30, will be entered for a chance to win 1 of 20-$100 gift cards. Students who register before April 15, will have their names entered twice!

The event will be live-streamed for those unable to attend in person, but we warmly invite you to join us in BRANCH 30. Dr. Shohini Ghose is a leading expert in quantum information science and the Director of the Centre for Women in Science at Wilfrid Laurier University.
