Apply to Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT)

All Tennessee College of Applied Technology applicants must Apply to the college using  Chattanooga State's Online Application  or Submit application in person to the TCAT Student Services Department in Room 20 of the TCAT.

TCAT students must be 18 years of age or 17 with a high school diploma or GED. If you are over 18, no High School Diploma or GED is required for most programs; however, a regular HS/GED/HiSet Diploma is required for Federal Financial Aid. There is no minimum GPA requirement. Commercial Truck Driving students must be 21 years of age. For program testing and entrance requirements please refer to admissions test requirements.

If you are a first-time TCAT student or a former TCAT student who is seeking to be readmitted, several TCAT programs (Automation Mechatronics, Car Mechatronics, Commercial Truck Driving, Medical Assisting, Massage Therapy, Practical Nursing, Surgical Technology) have additional admission requirements and/or a separate application process. Steps to Apply

Step 1: Apply to the college online or Submit application in person to the TCAT Student Services Department in Room 20 of the TCAT.

*TCAT students must be at least 18 years of age or 17 with a high school diploma or GED.

All first-time TCAT students must meet eligibility requirements through appropriate scores on ACT or SAT tests.  Students who have not taken ACT or SAT may take the ACCUPLACER tests, offered free of charge through the Chattanooga State Testing Center. Applicants may register to take the ACCUPLACER tests at https://www2.registerblast.com/Chattanoogastate/Exam/List

All TCAT programs except Practical Nursing require the ACCUPLACER Reading and Arithmetic test. (Choose Placement – TCAT Reading and Math.)

Practical Nursing applicants must take the ACCUPLACER Reading and Quantitative Reasoning tests. (Choose Placement – Reading and Math.)  

Prospective students should check with TCAT Student Services Department at 423-697-4433 or Learning Support Department at 423-697-2533 with questions regarding appropriate tests and test preparation.

Prospective students who have previously attended college or have a college degree should submit a copy of his or her transcript to the TCAT division office for evaluation, as he or she may be exempt from the admissions test requirement.

Step 2: Apply for Financial Aid

All prospective TCAT students who reside in Tennessee are encouraged to apply for the Wilder-Naifeh Technical Skills Grant by submitting a FAFSA. Complete the FAFSA at  www.fafsa.gov. Chattanooga State code: 003998.

Step 3: Submit academic transcripts and test scores.

  • Submit official copies of academic transcripts from every institution attended and ACT, SAT, or ACCUPLACER test scores.

Schedule a placement test if applicable.

Step 4: Schedule Appointment to Develop an Academic Plan

Students who pass the TCAT admissions test must visit the Student Services Department (TCAT 20), as some programs require a special registration permit in order to register.

Step 5: Register, Pay and Confirm

Register for Classes

Using your TigerID and and password provided by Chattanooga State, log in to Tiger Web to register for classes.

               Pay Your Tuition and Fees by the registration deadline to avoid having your classes automatically dropped.

Confirm Your Classes

Non-Financial Aid Student's classes are automatically confirmed once tuition and fees are paid. Financial Aid Students must log in to Tiger Web and confirm classes by the registration deadline.

Step 6: Obtain Credentials

All Chattanooga State students are required to have a Student ID and display a Parking Permit on their vehicle.

To obtain the above mentioned items visit the following locations:

  • Student ID – Health and Fitness Building (Gym) Room 180
  • Parking Permit - TCAT Rooms 14 & 20 or Bursar's Office, Student Center, Room 140
