What is counseling?

Answer: 

Counseling is a process where someone asks a professional who is trained in counseling for help with emotional problems. The professional will try to help the person seeking therapy to cope with the problem, and to mature and learn more about him or herself.

Should I See a Counselor

Answer: 

In the course of a lifetime, most of us feel stressed out, depressed, or anxious. Sometimes a friend or family member can offer help, but there are times when their help is not sufficient and the problems persist. Counseling provides a safe environment for you to explore those issues. Additionally, counseling can provide other resources and information that is helpful to you. You may want to talk to a counselor if you have been:

  • Drinking too much alcohol or using drugs • Experiencing a change in your eating habits
  • Sleeping differently
  • Having problems concentrating
  • Experiencing problems making decisions
  • Displaying dramatic mood swings
  • Feeling hopeless or helpless
  • Exposed to sexual, physical or emotional abuse
  • Having feelings of anxiety, fear, anger or depression that affect everyday life
  • Experiencing low self-esteem
  • Suffering from conflicts in relationships with friends, family or co-workers
  • Experiencing a traumatic event, like the death of a loved one or divorce
  • Thinking about suicide

How do I make an appointment for Personal Counseling?

Answer: 

It's easy! Just call 423-697-4421. The receptionist will help you select a convenient time. To help the counselor prepare for your visit, the receptionist will generally ask what assistance you need.

Are walk-ins welcome in the Counseling Center?

Answer: 

Walk-ins are welcome to see an "available" counselor. Due to the high percentage of scheduled appointments your wait may be extensive, appointments are recommended.

If I am in Emotional Crises, what can I do?

Answer: 

The Career Center has trained professional staff available to handle emotional crises situations. Contact our office while on campus for evaluation, counseling and/or referral as needed.

What is Chattanooga Chats?

Answer: 

Chattanooga Chats is a free workshop series that provides presentations to our campus and off campus communities on various social issues that affect our individual and collective lives. These workshops are designed to enhance the college student's classroom experience and the overall personal well being of all.

What services does the Counseling Center provide to students?

We assist current students with individual counseling sessions, online Mental Health screenings, and referrals.
